Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Hand Written Letter and Signed by Sir Alfred Gilbert. Dated 1890. The letter from the sculpture refers to the proposal for the recipient of the letter for the Arts club. Sir Alfred Gilbert RA 1854-1934 was an English sculptor. He was born in London and studied sculpture under Jo…seph Boehm, Matthew Noble, Édouard Lantéri and Pierre-Jules Cavelier. His first work of importance was The Kiss of Victory, followed by the trilogy of Perseus Arming, Icarus and Comedy and Tragedy. His most creative years were from the late 1880s to the mid-1890s, when he created celebrated works such as a memorial for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria and the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain.Provenance: From the family of autograph collector Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949), wife of Colonel William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). Emily was the daughter of William Lee, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow from 1874 to 1886, and granddaughter of John Lee (1779-1859), Principal of Edinburgh University from 1840 to 1859.
