In der Einführung ('Avertissement', p. 7 f.) schildert Guye, wie er durch persönliche Kontakte zu Nachfahren einstiger Beteiligter (Familie de Bosset, R. de Perrot) sowie Vermittlung des französischen Militärattachés ans Archiv im Château de Vincennes mit der Materie vertraut wurde : "j'ai manipulé des milliers des pièces, cherchant patienmment tous les renseignements concernant les officiers et les soldats du bataillon de Berthier." (p. 8) - Voraussetzungen u. Umstände der Gründung des Neuenburger Bataillons, nach den gelben Uniformröcken 'Canaris' genannte Truppen von Napoleons Marschall Louis-Alexandre Berthier, 1806-1814 Fürst von Neuenburg, sind detailliert dokumentiert : "Nous avons déjà parlé précédemment de l'etude historique de M. A. Bachelin sur la principauté de Neuchâtel au temps de Berthier, sur Berthier lui-même et sur les troupes neuchâteloises au service de l'empire [i.e. Auguste Bachelin, Alexandre Berthier: Prince et Duc souverain de Neuchâtel, ec., Neuchâtel, Montandon (1863), 88 SS.] [.] Nous préférons nous arrêter sur une partie [.] qui se rapporte au bataillon de Neuchâtel, et à sa belle conduite dans plusieurs circonstances des grandes guerres de l'Empire. Nous laissons avec plaisir sur ce sujet la parole à l'auteur: Le bataillon des troupes du prince Alexandre Berthier, dit bataillon de Neuchâtel, fut crée en vertu des décrets ci-apres" (y suivent le décret, daté 16 mai an 1807, et l'Avis pour le bataillon, du 16 juin 1807, signé Bosset, capitaine-adjoint à l'état-major de la grande armée; dans: Revue Militaire suisse, 1865, No. 17, p. 401 ff.). -- 2008 : "Un groupe de passionnés rêve de faire revivre le bataillon de Neuchâtel, dit des Canaris, en référence au jaune de l'uniforme des soldats ayant servi durant la période où Neuchâtel était principauté française, au début du 19e siècle. [.] La démarche, c'est celle d'une dizaine de personnes qui, il y a un an, ont décidé de reconstituer le bataillon [.]. [.] Symboliquement, l'acte de naissance du bataillon reconstitué est daté du 11 mai 2007, soit exactement deux siècles après le décret impérial signé de Berthier, créant ce corps de troupe au service de l'empereur Napoléon, qui sera engagé, notamment, en Espagne, au Portugal et sur le front russe, entre 1807 et 1814."
