Tissue-guarded plates, including frontispiece, by Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator Harry Clarke (1889 - 1931), the Dublin born leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. Full purple calf with gilt littering on boards and spine. Ornate endpapers. 8vo. xxx, 217 pp. Very Good Minus. The boards bear minor edgewear but are very good plus. The spine is crackled. The pages are clean and the binding is very tight. The interior is near fine. Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic known for his interest in taboo subjects and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. Swinburne was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1903 to 1907 and again in 1909. H. P. Lovecraft considered Swinburne "the only real poet in either England or America after the death of Mr. Edgar Allan Poe."
