Interior paper slightly toned and lightly foxed, but tipped-in color plates remain vibrant and unaffected. 8 color plates with facing-page commentary. Bright boards with lovely crisp title lettering on the spine. Protected by a glassine dust cover, which may even be as published. This has preserved the boards quite superbly. No inscriptions and clean pages throughout. Would probably be very difficult to find a better copy. Wonderful illustrations throughout.

Volume appears unopened and unread, very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscriptions or marks of any kind, clean crisp corners and edges, well held in joints and hinges. Beautifully bound in triple blind ruled and illustrated, bright gilt lettered and embossed, full purple cloth, featuring gilt embossed fox, hind, saddlery to spine and upper. Housed and protected in such good condition in transparent removable dustwrapper as issued. Dickens Pickwick Papers originated as a rival to the immensely popular Jorrocks; Thackeray envied Surtees his powers of observation, and William Morris considered him a master of life and ranked him with Dickens. The volume in hand is a great addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike. It appears that this copy has, at some time in the distant past, had its binding repaired with the original spine and front and back inlaid on top. It is however firmly bound though both visible old and newer parts of the binding are grubby and battered. 12 b&w engraved illustrations by Henry Alken, engraved frontispiece portrait of author by D. Maclise RA. The text is on the whole very clean but the 2 preliminaries, frontispiece and some of the engravings have dark foxing and some tissue guards are also foxed and one or two absent. A good reading copy.

Frontispiece loosening. Lacks some of the tissue guardsheets. The margins of the opening spread and the plates are discolored and sometimes heavily foxed. I don't know the cause of the discoloring. The text pages are clean. Three long articles on hunting, racing, and driving, reprinted from the Quarterly Review. Lots of colorful detail. On the elegance of London coachmen processing through Hyde Park he writes, "it is hard to determine which shine brightest, the lace on their clothes, their own round faces, or their flaxen wigs,--the pipe-clayed reins--pipe-clayed lest they should soil the clean white gloves,--the gigantic young fellows, in huge cocked hats, bedaubed with lace, in laced silk stockings, new kid gloves, and with gold-headed canes, . . . not forgetting the spotted coach-dog, which has just been washed for the occasion." However, he also notes that "like all other trades, coach-making is on the wane" and prices are dropping. An edition that often shows wear. Reading copy, sold as is, priced accordingly.
