No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Portrait of Abdullah Ibn Saud, last King of the first Saudi State (d. Constantinople, 1819). Steel engraving, sheet size 150x244mm, with publisher's blind stamp at the publication line. Very good, tanned and spotted with a couple of small perforations and nicks. The sheet has been slightly irreg…ularly cut, and is 145mm at the top. This was part of Benard's "Galerie Napoleon" series, which included prominent French and other royal, military and civilian figures alive during the time of Napoleon. The engraving is credited to J.A. (Jean Alexandre) Allais and dated 1830. The portrait, limited to the head and shoulders, is taken from Pascal Coste's full length portrait that appeared in Felix Mengin's "Histoire de l'Egypte sous le gouvernement de Mohammed-Aly" (Bertrand, 1823). It is surrounded by a grandly ornate border in which the names of its artist Leloy and printmaker Henri Desire Porret can be discerned. Above is the series title, and below the subject's name in Arabic and French.
