Small volume. The book is bound in fine dark green cloth with title on the spine in gilt. Corners and spine caps are very lightly worn. There is rippling on the covers, a binding error. String binding is strong. Tissue guard at the title page has small spots of foxing. There is a sprinkling of foxing here and there throughout the book. Otherwise, pages are age-toned, clean, smooth and unmarked. 397 pages including an index of first lines., followed by 8 pages of Sever and Francis advertisements.

Some soiling, rubbing, wear, but a Very Good copy.

Original green cloth, gilt, decorated in gilt and blind, 288 p. A gift inscription: "The Revd. Thos: Wilkins on his birthday 1866 with Mrs. Gatty's affectionate regards. Ecclesfield 16 Sep. 1866". Margaret Gatty was a writer of natural history and biography, and she wrote for children. Her husband was the Vicar and Thomas Wilkins the curate at the Ecclesfield parish. With the bookplate of Allingham bibliographer Mark Samuels Lasner, though he hadn't seen this when his bibliography was published. Spine ends fraying and other edges lightly rubbed. front endpapers cracked. A Good copy.

Ramage fine full leather binding with red onlaid red leather and gilt climbing rose to both boards and red and gilt onlaid leather rose decoration to the spine, structurally sound, faded to brown on the spine, rubbed through to the board on the corners. Silk covered end papers with inner gilt dentelles to the leather turn-ins and the binder's name in gilt to the base of the front paste down. Pagination: xlvii, [i], 393pp. Provenance: pencil inscription 'Cora' to the front. Approximately 10 ¼ inches tall (26cm). Condition Report Externally Spine very good condition faded to brown, five raised bands with gilt dot decoration, compartments with a gilt lined red rose in onlaid red leather, gilt titles and gilt lined compartments. Joints very good condition gently worn, faded to brown. Corners fair to good condition bumped and worn, top front corner through to the board. Boards very good condition green full leather boards with gilt lined climbing red rose in onlaid red leather with climbing rose stems and leaves in gilt. Page edges very good condition all gilt, minor marks. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition leather turn-ins with gilt leaf decoration to green leather, Ramage name in gilt to the base of the front paste down, silk covered boards to the centre, silk yellowed.
