Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This copy has a small ownership stamp and otherwise appears unread. Dear Tyrant, as his wife called him, is the story of Albert James Allom (1825-1909), his family and childhood, his adventurous youth, his relationship with Edward Gibbon Wakefield, his struggle for success, and his philosophy of life. His story begins in London then moves to New Zealand and, later, the West Indies before he returns to New Zealand. Later again, seven years are spent in Tasmania before a final return to New Zealand. In New Zealand he was a survey cadet for the New Zealand Company in Wellington, Manawatu and Otago before becoming an enterprising run-holder in the Wairarapa, a mining and farming estate manager on Great Barrier Island, the registrar of mines at Thames and Ohinemuri goldfields, and eventually a very active retiree in Auckland. The story of his life is laced with human insight, humour and tragedy. Many notable figures during New Zealand's colonial era appear in Allom's own writings which add immediacy to the narrative and there are poignant passages about his beloved wife, Eliza, and their family of nine children.

There is some 'pushing' to the head and tail of the spine. There is some spotting to the prelims. Mrs Gore (Catherine Grace Frances Gore) (nee Moody) (1799 - January 29, 1861) was a British novelist and dramatist, daughter of a wine merchant at Retford, where she was born. She is amongst the well-known of the silver fork writers - authors of the Victorian era depicting the gentility and etiquette of high society. Gore was born in London and raised in East Retford and London. Her first novel Theresa Marchmont, or The Maid of Honour was published in 1824. Her first major was success was Pin Money, published in 1831, but her most popular and well-known novel was to be Cecil, or Adventures of a Coxcomb published in 1841. Gore also found success as a playwright, writing eleven plays that made their way to the London stage, though her plays never quite became as famous as her witty novels. She married a Captain Gore, with whom she resided mainly on Continental Europe, supporting her family by her voluminous writings. Between 1824 and 1862 she produced about 70 works, the most successful of which were novels of fashionable English life. Among these may be mentioned Manners of the Day (1830), Cecil, or the Adventures of a Coxcomb (1841), and The Banker's Wife (1843). She also wrote for the stage, and composed music for songs. Gore's 1861 obituary in The Times concluded that Gore was "the best novel writer of her class and the wittiest woman of her age. The beauty of this book however is the twenty one engravings by Thomas Allom all of which have their own tissue guards. Ref Z3.
