Signed by Aloise Barbour Epperson below her frontispiece portrait and inscribed with date May 7, 1948. [ii], 74 pp. Bound in publisher's serviceable blue cloth lettered in gilt. Very Good+ with sunning to spine and dulling to gilt thereon, moderate wear and soiling to cloth, and several small bumps to board edges. Contents lightly toned, binding tight. Little is known of the African American author, whose work was published in the Black-owned newspaper Norfolk Journal and Guide and was posthumously featured in the 1996 anthology Harlem's Glory: Black Women Writing. Epperson began writing poetry after the death of her daughter, a loss she refers to in her preface: If any should sense in my songs a nameless longing, a haunting desire for the unattainable, let it be charged to the infinite sadness of loving freedom and of forever being denied its full privilege because of racial barriers; let it be charged to an aching desire to clasp in my arms once again an adored daughter snatched from me by the cold hand of death and mine now only in dreams; let it be charged to an abiding love of peace found nowhere now in a war-torn world.
