Contact seller4-star sellerFIRST EDITION. Wood engravings throughout. Original printed wrappers bound into later half sheep over marbled boards. In excellent condition. First edition, an illustrated satirical typology of students. Describing university attendees living in the Latin Quarter, the author attests to their constant eating and drinking, smoking… of cigarettes, and dancing like ancient philosophers. He goes on to address their penchant for fancy clothes and lizards, with whom they must be friends for how much time they spend sprawled in grassy parks. One chapter is devoted to medical students, who allegedly only learn about six illnesses (one being death), and will cut people open and drain their blood just to diagnose them with a cough. For all their selfishness, however, students remember to send letters to their parents, including a bill for the semester's revels. This copy retains the publisher's advertisements on the wrappers and final text leaf.
