It contains the diplomatic correspondence of the Prussian monarch with his ministers and diplomats at the European and some German courts. It covers the first half of the year 1783. The dominating issue for him (Frederick) were the declining relations with the ally Russia (since 1764) ever since the approach of Emperor Joseph from Austria to Empress Catherine II who was about to annex the Krim-Peninsular in 1783.; Von der bereits 1879 inaugurierten und bis 1939 stetig fortgesetzten »Politischen Correspondenz Friedrichs des Großen«, der für die preußische Außenpolitik unter Friedrich II. (1740-1786) zentralen Quellensammlung, erscheint nach längerer Unterbrechung Band 48. Der in der Hauptsache aus den Beständen des Geheimen Staatsarchivs Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin Dahlem gespeiste, im wesentlichen nach den bisherigen Editionsprinzipien erarbeitete Band erfasst für die erste Hälfte des ereignisreichen Jahres 1783 die diplomatische Korrespondenz des Monarchen mit seinen Ministern und den Gesandten an den europäischen Höfen und bei wichtigen deutschen Reichsfürsten, ferner den teils politischen Briefwechsel mit Friedrichs Nichte Wilhelmine von Oranien und der dänischen Königin-Witwe Juliane-Marie.Der Band dokumentiert in dichter Folge die preußische Position in dem komplizierten Netzwerk der europäischen Politik. Friedrich muss wider Willen nach der Annäherung Kaiser Josephs II., seines großen Gegenspielers im Reich, an Katharina II. als entbehrlicher Nochverbündeter Rußlands (seit 1764) die Rolle des unbeteiligten Zuschauers und kritischen Beobachters einnehmen; unterdessen annektiert die russische Kaiserin 1783 in Realisierung ihres »Griechischen Plans« zur Liquidierung des Osmanischen Reiches gerade die Krim, während Paris und London noch über die Beendigung des amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges (Friede von Versailles) verhandeln und bei den Sondierungen der preußischen Gesandten für eine neue Bündniskonstellation vorerst nicht bereit sind.
