Er gelangte nicht nur zu einer Trennung von Orientierungsdoppelbrechung und photoelastischem Effekt, die bis dahin bei solchen Objekten vielfach noch zusammengeworfen wurden, sondern er konnte bei der Orientierungsdoppelbrechung zwei Anteile von ganz verschiedener Art unterscheiden, die Texturdoppelbrechung, die durch die Anisometrie eines submikroskopischen Feinbaues nach Art eines WIENERschen Mischköpers hervorgerufen wird, und die Eigendoppelbrechung, die auf amikroskopischem Feinbau der Texturelemente selbst zu beziehen ist, der bald darauf durch das Röntgen-Faserdiagramm als raumgittermäßige Ordnung gesichert wurde. Auf dieser Grundlage und unter Beachtung der neueren Einsichten in die Stereochemie der Baustoffe ließ sich die Polarisationsoptik von Zell- und Gewebestrukturen als hydrogele und lipoide Schichtsysteme befriedigend deuten und zugleich für die Analyse des Feinbaues verwenden."
