Condition: Good. - An oval, sepia-toned magazine portrait, 3-7/8 inches high by 3-1/8 inches wide, is mounted on a piece of cream card, approximately 6-1/4 inches high by 3-5/8 inches wide. Inscribed in black ink on the mount below the portrait: "To Seymour Halpern, / with best wishes, / John Powell". The mount is lightly soiled & there is some black staining to the blank verso. Good. The head-and-shoulders portrait depicts a handsome young Powell in profile, wearing a suit and tie.John Powell [1882-1963], an American pianist, composer and ethnomusicologist, was born and brought up in Virginia. He was one of the founders of the White Top Folk Festival, held in Grayson County, Virginia, which promoted the music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains. A firm believer in segregation and white supremacy, Powell helped found the Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America, which soon had numerous posts in Virginia. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.

A head-and shoulders portrait of Albert Spalding wearing a white shirt and a spotted bow tie, photographed against a plain white background.Albert Spalding [1888-1953] was an internationally recognized violinist and composer. He studied the violin privately in New York City and Florence and at conservatories in Paris and Bologna, the latter graduating him with honors at the age of 14. He retired from the concert stage in 1950 and thereafter taught master classes at Boston University and, in the summers, at Florida State University. The credit slip attached to the photograph lists him as "Albert Spaulding [sic] who upholds America's proud right to claim the production of a violinist of indisputably first rank".The photographer George Maillard Kesslere [1894-1979] studied art at Syracuse University. On graduating he established a portrait studio in Syracuse, N.Y. where he practiced both photography and painting. In 1921 he moved his studio to New York where he won fame for the artistic qualities of his theatrical and fashion photography and for his paintings and pastels of diaphonously draped nude dancers. His portraiture won him recognition by the British Royal Academy of Photography. The "B.P. "which he later attached to his signature referred to this honor.

Seller: Blue Mountain Books & Manuscripts, Ltd., Cadyville, NY, U.S.A.
Condition: Fine. Sushan, New York, 1961., 1961. Fine. - An original 7-1/8 inch high by 9-1/8 inch wide matte finish black & white photograph portraying both modern American composers Carl Ruggles & Henry Cowell in profile from the chest up. With a grassy hill rising in the background, Cowell, at left, is attired in a suit jacket over a plaid shirt and tie, a wry smile on his face as he gazes at Ruggles. Ruggles, pictured at right, is attired in a dark jacket over a white shirt and tie, his hand resting on Cowell's shoulder. The photographer, Henry Cowell's wife Sidney Robertson Cowell has boldly penciled editorial annotations in graphite on the verso and further identified and initialed the photograph in purple ink in her hand "Henry Cowell & Carl Ruggles at Shushan, N.Y. 1954 / Photo SRC", subsequently crossing out the date and correcting it to "1961". The photograph is further identified by Sidney Cowel on a typed label mounted on the verso, stating "HC & Carl Ruggles, Shushan, NY, 1961. SC. [her initials]. Carl had the best composer's ears of his time for trapping sounds." Indeed, from the image, both composers seem to be listening to the natural sounds around them. There are minute faint creases, else fine. The American composer Henry Cowell (1897-1965) was strongly influenced by Oriental music as well as Irish and Midwestern folk tunes. Exploring the music of Africa, Java, and India, he revolutionized American music with innovations such as tone clusters and directly plucking the piano's strings. His compositions include "Aeolian Harp", "The Tides of Manaunaun", "Sinister Resonance" and "The Lilt of the Reel". The American composer, painter and teacher Carl Ruggles (1876-1971) was a modernist composer who employed dissonant counterpoint in his works. He was one of the founders of the ultramodernist movement, along with Henry Cowell and Ruth Crawford Seeger. Henry Cowell's wife, Sidney Robertson Cowell (1903-1995) was a pianist and an American ethnomusicologist and collector of folk songs.
