Condition: Good. New York, September 20th, 1886., 1886. Good. - Over 22 words of prose penned by the Irish-American actor, singer, playwright and lyricist Edward Harrigan on 6-7/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide buff paper. Dated Sept. 10th 1886, the words were penned soon after his comedic play "The Leather Patch" was performed at Harrigan's Park Theatre in New York City, with "Park Theatre" penned by Harrigan along the top. "Life without love is like a cake of ice drifting along the endless rivers of Time." Harrigan concludes with a few words in Irish. Signed in full "Edward Harrigan". The edges of the page are darkened. The page has been mounted with glue from the verso on a 7-3/8 inch high by 9-1/2 inch wide sheet removed from an album. Also mounted next to Harrigan's lyrics are over 16 words of prose penned by the English-born American stage actress Annie Robe on a 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet. Dated Feb. 6th 1887, Robe has written "I wish it was spring / All the year round / And that roses grew / Under our feet / (Sheridan)". Signed "Annie Robe". There are slight glue stains to the corners. Mounted on the verso of the sheet are the autographs of 3 other theatrical personalities. That of the late 19th Century American stage actress Marie Burroughs is penned on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card stock. The American theatrical manager Albert Marshman Palmer has signed himself "Yours very truly, A.M. Palmer" on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card stock mounted diagonally as to slightly overlap the previous card. The renowned French opera-bouffe actress and singer Marie Aimee has penned the words "To Mme [___?] Marie Aimee Oct. 4, 1886" on 3-3/8 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide card stock mounted as to overlap the bottom border of the previous autograph. The left edge of the soiled and slightly creased sheet removed from the autograph album is slightly chipped. Good. The Irish-American actor, singer, dancer, playwright, lyricist and theater producer Edward Harrigan (1844-1911) formed one of the most celebrated theatrical partnerships of the 19th century with Tony Hart. Harrigan is known as one of the founding fathers of modern American musical theater whose productions of multi-act plays incorporated physical comedy with singing and dancing. Harrigan & Hart's breakthrough hit came with "The Mulligan Guard", a lampoon of an Irish neighborhood militia with music by his future father-in-law David Braham. The sequel "The Mulligan Guard Picnic" settled itself on Broadway in 1878 and integrated more of a story line. Having separated from Hart in the meantime, by 1886 Harrigan's comedic play "The Leather Patch", also with songs by David Braham, opened at the Park Theatre in New York City on February 15, 1886. The late 19th century American stage actress Marie Burroughs (1866-1926) played prominent roles in many plays. The American theatrical manager Albert Marshman Palmer (1838-1905) was well known in the theatrical world as A.M. Palmer. The renowned French opera-bouffe actress and singer Marie Aimee (1852-1887) gained international fame in the 1870's, touring the United States, Mexico and Cuba with her own company. Known for her wit and charm, she performed in Jacques Offenbach's Operettas. Her career was brief as she passed away at the age of 35. The English-born American actress Annie Robe (1866-1922) came to prominence in the last decades of the Victorian era.
