First Edition
First Edition. Octavo. 21cm. Publisher's original blue-green paper wraps titled and decorated in black. 103pp. Some marginal wear and creasing, chipping to spine ends, some additional soiling to the wraps, but strong and supple. Internally clean, with some spotting and toning here and there, mainly to the upper edges of the page block, untrimmed, leaving luxuriously wide margins. An eminently presentable copy of a publication not printed to endure. Alina Louise Soldane D'Eldir, later occasionally referring to herself as Alina D'Eldir-Mercier as a gesture towards her husband, a French Captain of Gendarmes (or alternatively an officer in the Napoleonic military) who had married her during a period of precarity, remains one of the most fascinating players on the stage of mesmerism in the early 19th century. Her official narrative sounds very much like something dreamed up by an enterprising sideshow barker, and the relevant truths are now unlikely to be unearthed. The fame she attracted however, resulted in as many rumors about her as there were facts, and time has rendered them mostly indistinguishable. She claimed to have been the royal daughter of a prominent Rajah, possibly in Chandernagor, perhaps in Delhi, who at the age of 4, on some festival day or other (some accounts maintain it was her wedding as a child bride) fell into the river and was swept away before being picked up by a British ship attracted by the glinting of her jewellery in the water. The ship took her to European waters where it was captured by the French, and the tiny Indian Princess was taken to France. Again there are conflicting accounts, some say the unknown British ship never existed and the tiny princess was kidnapped by bandits before being rescued by a loyal servant who entrusted her to a noble Frenchwoman who sent her to France; it appears clear however that none of this cast of characters considered returning her to her home. Once in France, our small heroine, alternately described as Hindu or as a Muslim, and undoubtedly converted to Catholicism without regard for her personal beliefs, became notable for her beauty and quick intelligence and came to the attention of the Empress Josephine, who all but adopted her until Josephine's fall from grace caused D'Eldir to have to make a living from performing her amazingly successful mesmeric treatments. There are numerous inconsistencies in the canon accounts of her life; she was widely credited to be the inspiration for the 1798 French novel "La Belle Indienne; Ou les Aventures de la Petite-fille de Grand Mogol" (by Baroness Cornelia de Vassé, who was also the author of an impassioned plea to the General Assembly to allow Jews their rights as Citizens of France, and an early work of lunar sci-fi entitled "The Flying Chariot") which would mean she had to have been in France for long enough to be established and famous, but there would have been no Imperial patronage available, due to a historically noted lack of Emperors until several years later. Her oft repeated memories of her childhood in the Rajah's palace were rich in detail regarding clothing and spectacle, but rather lacking in names and places or any other specifics, and even at the time it was remarked as odd that she could recall every detail of the day upon which she was swept away, but not the name of the ships or any of the crews who took her aboard. Regardless of the mysterious manner in which she ended up in the court of France, or perhaps because of it, Alina D'Eldir was accepted and feted by all but the most cynical, including the Anglo-Indian contingent. In later life she wrote several lengthy letters to the British authorities in India (although 'Chandernagor' was a French administration region until the 20th century) asking for assistance in recognizing her title and rights, although she was recorded as refusing to give up her adopted Catholicism, and her pleas seem to have been more for legitimacy than profit. She set herself up in Paris as a mesmeric healer, although it was a brand of mesmerism that benefited greatly from the addition of some Eastern mystical authenticity, and saw notable success. The demand for her cures combined with some rather theatrical flourishes, including the healing of a chamber maid in mid-seizure directly beneath D'Eldir's window (which was performed by the pointing of a wand and an instruction to get up and go home), had the rather unwelcome side effect of getting her accused of witchcraft (something which women practising mesmerism had to be wary of), until her high profile clientele vouched for this being mere superstition. She remains however one of the few women recorded as having credible mesmeric practice, (although she was part of the Duchess de Bourbon's circle, and that redoubtable lady had learned magnetic techniques from Puységur) and almost undoubtedly the first woman of color. So compelling were her abilities and philosophies, that she gathered quite a significant following of thinkers and radicals in a number of fields. Some of those followers, like Villenave, who set himself the task of recording the facts of D'Eldir's practice, and Fortia D'Urban supported her in the founding of what became known as the Universal Asian Moral Order, an esoteric and rather Freemasonry flavored order intended to reward moral rectitude, kindness, and selfless acts by individuals regardless of their origin, "race", color or creed. As an attempt to create a co-operative community of humankind it certainly had great merit, although despite persisting for several decades, it was unable to survive the eventual death of its creator in 1851 at the age of 89. Alina D'Eldir is without doubt one of the most fascinating figures in mesmerism, a field which contains many such luminous personalities, her marginalisation in the annals of the phenomena could be due to a number of factors, but chief amongst them were her gender, her color, and her insistence on forging a new path into the thickets o.
