The heroic deeds and words of a warrior poet of northern Arabia An epic hero and a poet, the semi-legendary Shayi? al-Amsa? was a prominent ancestor of the Shammar tribal confederation that stretches across the Great Nafud desert in the northern Arabian Peninsula. Shayi?'s corpus of extant poems are preserved in narratives about his chivalrous exploits transmitted orally for centuries. In this volume, Marcel Kurpershoek vividly translates the deeds and verses of this compelling poet, based on recordings of late-twentieth century reciters, a testament to Shayi?'s prominence as an embodiment of Bedouin virtue, courage, wiliness, and generosity. Born with one eye, Shayi? presents himself as unattractive and unassuming, only to reveal a hero's strength, sagacity, and wiliness. In a number of stories, he is shown hiding his identity, whether in disguise as an impoverished Bedouin or on a camel deliberately made to look mangy and weak. An interesting publication, providing extensive data on the Poor and Indigent for the year 1852 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with the data broken down into the various counties. Numerous fold outs. Amsa Walker (1799-1875) was a political economist. In 1849 he was chosen to the Massachusetts senate, where he introduced a plan for a sealed-ballot law, which was enacted in 1851, and carried a bill providing that Webster's Dictionary should be introduced into the common schools of Massachusetts. He was elected secretary of state in 1851, re-elected in 1852, and in 1853 was chosen a member of the convention for revising the state constitution, becoming the chairman of the committee on suffrage. He was appointed in 1853 one of the examiners in political economy in Harvard, and held that office until 1860, and in 1859 he began an annual course of lectures on that subject in Amherst, which he continued until 1869. Meanwhile, in 1859, he was again elected to the Massachusetts legislature, and in 1860 he was chosen a member of the electoral college of that state, casting his ballot for Abraham Lincoln. Covers show general wear and soiling. Pages show some wear at corners and edges, overall the interior is very well preserved. Amasa Delano, whose Voyages and Travels (1817) was the source for Herman Melville's Benito Cereno (1855), was born in Massachusetts. After serving briefly in the Continental army during the American Revolution, Delano began a lifelong career as sailor, ship captain, and occasional shipbuilder, often in conjunction with his brother Samuel. Delano gave significant space to an account of his capture of the Spanish ship Tryal off the coast of Chile in 1801 and to the events subsequent to the capture. Seeing the ship in apparent difficulty, Delano went aboard, was told that the ship was long without provisions, remained on board while a boat went for food and water, and learned that the slaves had revolted and captured the ship only when its captain, Benito Cereno, jumped into his boat as it was leaving. Melville's rewriting of that account is one of his most famous narratives, Benito Cereno. Voyages and Travels focuses on his experiences in the Pacific and Indian Oceans from 1790 until 1807, during which time Delano several times circumnavigated the globe. In Voyages and Travels Delano clearly wants to be both informative and entertaining. He offers advice on what supplies to take on a voyage, how best to approach specific islands and landfalls, and where to find water and other supplies. He describes not only such well-known places as Canton, Bombay, Calcutta, and Lima but also the Palau Islands, New Guinea, and other relatively unexplored areas. Finally, Delano likes to tell a good story: a battle with the natives of New Guinea, the mutiny on the Bounty and its aftermath, a near drowning. Delano clearly wonders whether civilization is best for the natives of the islands he visits. He ordinarily thinks well of the islanders and believes that European exploitation has caused most of the antagonism he encounters.
