Quelques indications au stylo bille sur certaines pages, vraisemblablement du dédicataire. Envoi autographe signé et daté de l'auteur à Michel Garder : "???????? ?????? ????? - ? ???????? ???????????????? ?? ?????? ?????? 29.I.1975." [Au cher Michel Garder avec une profonde reconnaissance. En bon souvenir. 29.I.1975.] * Chercheur à l'Institut de littérature mondiale de Moscou et l'un des principaux critiques littéraires du journal libéral Novy Mir, Andreï Siniavski était également l'auteur de textes moquant le régime soviétique et le « réalisme socialiste », genre littéraire officiel. Pour échapper à la censure soviétique, Siniavski publia ces écrits en Occident ; le plus important d'entre eux, les Récits fantastiques, parut en France en 1958 sous le pseudonyme d'Abram Tertz. Cette « provocation » ne put être ignorée longtemps par le K.G.B. : en 1966, l'écrivain fut jugé pour propagande antisoviétique et condamné à sept ans de bagne. Le présent ouvrage fait partie des trois textes rapportés par Siniavski du bagne. ????? ?? ???? parut en 1973 à Londres, chez Stenvalley Press, petite maison d'édition liée au tamizdat et aux milieux de l'émigration russe, dans le contexte de la diffusion occidentale des textes dissidents soviétiques. Cette même maison diffusa la version bilingue, russe et anglaise, du discours qu'Alexandre Soljenitsyne devait prononcer à la réception de son prix Nobel : publié par Stenvalley en 1973, ce texte avait paru un an plus tôt dans le Nobel Yearbook de septembre 1972. Libéré après six années de détention, Siniavski émigra quant à lui en France, où il devint professeur à la Sorbonne. Organisé sous forme de lettres à sa femme, ????? ?? ???? mêle jargon grossier du goulag et réflexion sur l'art. S'il laissa perplexe la bonne société des émigrés russes, il remporta néanmoins, dans la catégorie essai, le prix du Meilleur Livre étranger de 1974, et devint le chef-d'uvre de Siniavski. Sa traduction française parut la même année aux éditions du Seuil. L'envoi autographe qui enrichit cet exemplaire, adressé à un autre émigré russe Michel Garder, témoigne des liens forts au sein de la diaspora russe opposée au régime soviétique. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur la société soviétique, Garder relatait également l'actualité de l'URSS dans l'hebdomadaireRousskaïa Mysl (La Pensée russe), le plus ancien journal en langue russe publié en Europe. Ce journal militait contre la politique et l'idéologie répressives de l'URSS, défendait les valeurs démocratiques et la liberté de conscience, et soutenait le mouvement dissident ; le destin et l'uvre d'Alexandre Soljenitsyne, proches à cet égard de ceux de Siniavski, y furent largement commentés. Il n'est donc guère surprenant que Michel Garder, important contributeur du journal, ait entretenu des liens étroits avec Andreï Siniavski.
