André… Mévil (1870-1956) était principalement un journaliste spécialisé dans les questions de politique extérieure. Ce récit retrace les péripéties d'un voyage effectué en 1896 au Sénégal et au Soudan avec une mission chargée d'étudier les ressources en or du Bambouk. Mévil écrit d'une plume alerte, se laissant guider par ses impressions mais le journaliste n'est jamais loin, lorsqu'il évoque les moeurs des habitants, la situation des européens avec un émouvant passage sur le retour des corps des membres de la Colonne Bonnier massacrés au Soudan en 1894.

L'idée lui était venue d'utiliser les relations qu'il s'était créées dans maints pays pour servir son amour de la bibliop…hilie. Il rêva, en effet, d'un exemplaire unique qui serait un hommage mondial à La Fontaine. Non seulement il intéressa à son projet Delacroix, Charlet, Decamps, etc, mais il sollicita les artistes connus sous toutes les latitudes jusqu'aux Orientaux, jusqu'aux primitifs Abyssins. Cette collections sans analogue était restée entre les mains de son petit-fils, M Jagerschmidt, et n'était connue que de quelques privilégiés. Les larges emprunts que nous lui faisons, en associant différents procédés pour la fidélité des reproductions, en feront comprendre tout l'intérêt, tout le prix. Et ce ne sera pas le moindre attrait de ces pages que ces interprétations si diverses de la philosophie de notre La Fontaine. Artículo aparecido en 1934 en la revista francesa L'Illustration.
