En 1942, il devint titulaire de la chaire d'histoire de la civilisation romaine au Collège de France . Inspiré par l'uvre et la méthode de Fustel de Coulanges, André Piganiol fut également fortement influencé par la sociologie et les revues L'Année sociologique et Les Annales auxquelles il collabora.
