Der berechtigte Stolz, der uns Eisenbahner erfüllt, wenn wir der wechselhaften, stets aber von unermüdlicher Arbeit gekennzeichneten Geschichte unseres Betriebes gedenken, verbindet sich mit der dankbaren Erinnerung an jene Männer, deren Namen mit der Pionierzeit der Eisenbahn für immer verbunden sind. Denn die österreichischen Eisenbahnen von heute sind ? wie die europäischen Bahnen in ihrer Gesamtheit ? ein langsam und stetig gewachsener Verkehrsorganismus, der ohne seine historischen Wurzeln nicht verstanden werden kann und der sich bis herauf in die jüngste Gegenwart immer noch auf die Fundamente stützt, die vor mehr als einem Jahrhundert gelegt worden sind. Jeder eisenbahngeschichtliche Zeitabschnitt, jede Generation von Eisenbahnern hatte ihre besonderen Probleme und ihre besonderen Aufgaben. Jede Zeit aber hat auf ihre Weise zu dem großen Werk beigetragen, Österreichs Eisenbahnnetz zu schaffen, es zu vervollkommnen, zu erhalten und auszubauen. Die gleiche Verpflichtung ist uns heute auferlegt, und sie wird von anderen übernommen werden, wenn wir einmal nicht mehr sind. Wie in den vergangenen 125 Jahren, so werden sich Österreichs Eisenbahner auch in Zukunft bemühen und dafür arbeiten, daß die Bahn, modernisiert und dem technischen Fortschritt angepaßt, jederzeit ein taugliches, leistungsstarkes Verkehrsinstrument im Dienste der Wirtschaft und des gesamten österreichischen Volkes bleibe.
