"Es wird hiermit erklärt, daß Rudolf Kaschnitz in der Registratur des kk Finanzministeriums als beeideter Praktikant angestellt ist, daß er sich vollkommen entsprechend verwendet, und daß es für die Geschäfte des genannten Amtes in einem hohen Grade erwünschlich erscheint, diesen Praktikanten behalten zu können". - Baumgartner war nach seiner Promotion als Assistent an den Lehrstühlen für Philosophie, Mathematik und Physik beschäftigt. 1817 wurde er zum Professor der Physik an das Gymnasium von Olmütz und 1823 an die Universität Wien berufen. Er veröffentlichte Untersuchungen zur Mechanik, zu Dampfkesseln und -maschinen und gab 1826-37 die "Zeitschrift für Physik und verwandte Wissenschaften" heraus. Nach seiner Lehrtätigkeit leitete er Porzellan- und Tabakfabriken und 1846-48 die Errichtung der elektrischen Telegraphen. 1847 wurde er zum Hofrat bei der Allgemeinen Hofkammer, zum Leiter des Eisenbahnwesens und 1848 zum Minister der öffentlichen Arbeiten ernannt. 1851 erfolgte seine Berufung zum Handels- und Finanzminister, seine Erhebung in den Freiherrenstand und die Wahl zum Präsidenten der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien. Nach dem Rücktritt von seinen Ministerämtern gehörte Baumgartner dem Staatsrat und seit 1861 dem österreichischen Herrenhaus an. - Mit papiergedecktem Siegel und einer weiteren U. des k.k. Es wird mich sehr freuen, dich als meinen Begleiter zu sehen [.]". - Mit einem kleinen horizontalen Randeinriss. - Baumgartner wurde 1851 zum Minister für Handel, Gewerbe und öffentliche Bauten berufen und im Dezember des gleichen Jahres auch zum Finanzminister.
