Whereas people have diverging notions of efficiency, we commonly agree about the meaning of productivity. The latter is a familiar and intuitive measure of economic performance that can be applied on different scales ranging from the individual worker up to whole nations (Färe et al., 2008). However, efficiency and productivity are strongly linked to each other through the various techniques by which the determinants of producer performance are measured. Efficiency can be defined as a comparison between observed and optimal values of the output and input level of a production unit (Lovell, 1993). Thereby, we may refer to the maximum output level that can be potentially obtained from a given input, or the minimum potential input level that is required to produce a given output. On the other hand, productivity is simply determined as the ratio of a producer's output to its input. There are two basic reasons to explain our interest in measuring efficiency and productivity. Most importantly, production units can be evaluated using these success indicators, which enable the comparison of the performance across production units or the performance change of a specific producer across time. Secondly, we are interested in identifying the source of efficiency or productivity differentials in order to design policies that should help to improve the performance of public and private institutions. Hence, performance measures can be useful to explore hypotheses about the effects of market structure, economic regulation or the effect of ownership on performance (Lovell, 1993). Based on this microeconomic framework, we may apply these measures to the empirical study of output growth differentials between alternative countries. Since the early approach of growth accounting that was introduced by Robert Solow (1957), many innovative methods for measuring efficiency and productivity have been developed. We can roughly distinguish between productivity indices, data-envelopment analysis and frontier production functions. This work is focused on the broad methodology of productivity indices, which includes traditional approaches as well as more developed aspects of productivity measurement based on production frontiers. …

The relation between voluntary disclosure quality and cost of equity capital is widely known to be affected by self-selection. Potential endogeneity bias is controlled for by adopting a two-stage least squares approach in a cross-sectional setting. Voluntary disclosure quality is proxied by the annual reports disclosure scores for a well-diversified sample of Swiss firms as developed by the Department of Banking and Finance of the University of Zurich. Further, an ex-ante cost of capital metric derived from the dividend discount model is used in this study. Empirical evidence shows that the association between voluntary disclosure quality and cost of equity differs with a firm's stock listing history. While the relation is predicted to be negative for firms at the IPO stage, it is likely reversed at some point in a firm's stock listing history. These results suggest that analysts' information processing activities negatively moderate the impact of voluntary disclosure quality on firm value. Importantly, the predicted interaction between voluntary disclosure quality and stock listing history remains significant when adjusting for endogeneity.…

During the second part of the last century, many markets have been discovered to have failed in providing the necessary conditions for efficient matches. These market failures have partly evolved on ethical or institutional grounds, but are more generally attributed to congestion or coordination problems caused by the inability of the market to make it safe for participants to act on their private information. For this reason, a variety of allocation mechanisms have been developed and subsequently tested in field and laboratory experiments for possible implementation in real-world applications.This work attempts at giving a condensed review of different matching mechanisms and the performance of algorithms that have been implemented for solving the problems in their respective environments. The theoretical properties of these mechanisms as described in the increasingly vast literature on matching design will be used as a benchmark to compare their relative performance in terms of overall efficiency. The results yield some basic insights in the varying success of the competing algorithms in practice, indicating that both the quality of theoretical predictions and the actual performance of the algorithms decrease with the complexity of market environments. In particular, they show that imperfections of markets such as information asymmetry and incentive problems can have far-reaching consequences with respect to the effective working of matching procedures.…

Derartige Wasserwellen ereignen sich daher oft unerwartet und stellen eine bedeutende Naturgefahr dar, weil sie oftmals ganze Uferbereiche verwüsten oder an Talsperren überschwappen. Aufgrund der steilen Uferpartien, geringen Seebreiten, potentiell grossen Rutschmassen und der andererseits vielfach exponierten Lage von Siedlungen und Wasserbauwerken ist das Risiko von Impulswellen im Alpenraum besonders hoch. Die Generierung von Impulswellen im Eintauchbereich des Rutsches und deren Propagation im Nahbereich der Wellengenerationszone wurden in einem zweidimensionalen physikalischen Modell untersucht. Die massgeblichen Rutscheigenschaften wie Form, Volumen und Eintauchgeschwindigkeit wurden durch einen Pneumatikgenerator mit eingebauter Rutschbox gesteuert, welche die granulare Rutschmassein einen rechteckig-prismatischen Wellenkanal beschleunigte. Die Effekte der Eintauchgeschwindigkeit, der Rutschmächtigkeit, der granularen Rutschmasse und der Ruhewassertiefe auf die resultierende Impulswelle wurden unabhängig voneinander untersucht. Einzig der Eintauchwinkel = 45° längs der Hangneigungsrampe des Rutsches und der granulare Korndurchmesser wurden nicht variiert. Die Wellenprofile wurden von sieben kapazitiven Wellenpegeln aufgenommen, welche längs der Kanalachse in konstantem Abstand hintereinander angeordnet waren. Das turbulente Dreiphasengemisch aus Luft, Wasser und eintauchendem Granulat in der Wellengenerationszone wurde mithilfe von Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) festgehalten, einer nicht-intrusiven Methode zur Aufnahme von instantanen Fliessgeschwindigkeitsfeldern. [.] Die aus dem physikalischen Modell hergeleiteten Dimensionierungsgleichungen wurden anhand von Feldmessungen einzelner Prototypen getestet, woraus sich eine zufriedenstellende Übereinstimmung ergab. Ausserdem wurden die Resultate aus den granularen Rutschversuchen auf Vergleichsmessungen mit starren Blöcken in demselbenphysikalischen Modell angewandt. Die resultierenden Abweichungen ergaben, dass starre und kompakte Blöcke beim Eintauchen in einen ruhenden Wasserkörper grössere Impulswellen als deformierbare und poröse Rutschkörper bei sonst identischen Rutschparametern erzeugen.…
