Zur Entstehungszeit dieses Textes war Rumänien noch von einem gewalttätigen Regime beherrscht, das den Menschen eine offiziel…le Moral verordnete und individuelles Nachdenken über ethische Grundsätze verbot. Andrei Plesu hat sich diesem Diktat widersetzt und eine Schrift verfaßt, in der er wesentliche Grundlagen für eine öffentliche Diskussion der moralischen Werte im späten 20. Jahrhundert formuliert; er selbst hat diesen Essay damals als "den Ton der Stimmgabel vor einem noch abwesenden Orchester" bezeichnet. Nach der Veröffentlichung der Originalausgabe des Werks haben die rumänischen Behörden Plesus Verbannung in ein Dorf in Moldavien veranlaßt; doch schon wenig später wurde das Ceausescu-Regime gestürzt und - um bei Plesus Vergleich zu bleiben - der Orchestergraben besetzt. Der mit diesem Essay angestimmte Ton läßt nicht nur erkennen, daß die intellektuelle Elite des neuen Rumänien fest in den Traditionen der europäischen Geistesgeschichte verwurzelt ist, sondern daß sie auch jeden Anspruch hat, in allen Teilen Europas gehört zu werden.
