'The settlement of the hinterland of the State of Victoria was preceded by two great land explorations, that of Hume and Hovell in 1824, and that dealt with here . In this most significant of his four exploratory journeys, Mitchell followed down the Lachlan to the Murray and Darling Rivers and then, from the Murray, made a great sweep through "Australia Felix" (now the rich Western District of Victoria)'.
