[.] Fino ai primi anni del Settecento la scultura a tutto tondo, nella piena accezione del termine, era pressoché sconosciuta in Russia a causa del veto oppostole dalla Chiesa ortodossa. Solo negli ultimissimi an…ni del Seicento alcuni scultori fecero la loro comparsa a Mosca, allora la capitale dello stato russo, provenienti dall'Europa occidentale (e pertanto anche dall'Italia). Una grande passione per la scultura manifestò fin dai suoi primi anni di regno lo zar Pietro il Grande (1672-1725), che nel 1703 fondò la nuova capitale del paese, San Pietroburgo. Venuto a contatto con l'arte europea durante un soggiorno tra il 1698 e il 1699 in Germania, Olanda, Inghilterra e Austria, egli individuò anche nella scultura un mezzo per introdurre in patria la cultura allora più avanzata dell'Occidente. Fin dal 1707 Pietro cominciò a promuovere una serie di acquisti mirati di opere d'arte plastica; finché, al momento della morte, la sua collezione privata arrivò a includere non meno di trecento fra statue, busti e bassorilievi di marmo, oltre a un centinaio tra statue e busti realizzati in piombo. La scultura marmorea, salvo alcune eccezioni, veniva reperita in Italia (soprattutto a Venezia), mentre quella in piombo era solitamente acquistata in Olanda. Tutte quelle opere d'arte erano prevalentemente destinate ad addobbare il Giardino d'Estate a Pietroburgo; ma non poche furono inviate a Peterhof, la residenza estiva dello zar sul Golfo di Finlandia. [.] (Sergej Androsov) Questo volume presenta la magnifica collezione di scultura italiana dell'Ermitage, di cui fanno parte diversi riconosciuti capolavori: primo fra tutti il Ragazzo accosciato (o Adolescente) di Michelangelo, seguito da altre opere straordinarie, molto amate dal pubblico russo, come la Madonna col Bambino di Antonio Rossellino, una Natività in maiolica riconducibile al nome di Benedetto Buglioni, i celeberrimi rilievi di Antonio Lombardo, il Bimbo morto su un delfino attribuito a Lorenzetto, e molti altri. Tutte queste opere sono state ambasciatori eccelsi della cultura italiana in Russia; se da un lato accarezzano lo sguardo del visitatore dell'Ermitage, dall'altro hanno stimolato non poche scoperte scientifiche e dibattiti, poiché da sempre l'Ermitage ha saputo unire nelle proprie attività il rigore scientifico e la capacità di allietare l'occhio.
