One hot July night that year, in the heart of the Tenderloin, a gambling~house proprietor named Herman Rosenthal was gunned down by hired killers (who made one of the first automobile getaways in history). Circumstances conspired to make the murder one of the most famous of the century. The public was already inflamed about police grafting; and the man arrested for the murder was a known grafter: a tough, handsome police lieutenant, Charles Becker. With the aid of the press, Becker's trial quickly became a public issue. High~minded reformers and the general public insisted on his guilt, and the prospect of convicting a corrupt cop ~ even though those who testified against him were equally corrupt ~ was politically irresistible. For not the first or the last time, the court's proper function of dispensing justice was subverted to vent the public rage; and Becker, almost certainly innocent, wound up in the electric chair at Sing Sing, where even his execution was mishandled. The prosecutor, District Attorney Charles Whitman~as interesting a study in ambition as Becker himself~was elevated to the New York governor's seat by the grateful voters, and later became an active candidate for the Presidency. Against the Evidence is a rich, dramatic, and skillful re~creation of the Becker~Rosenthal case, which reverberated through the city's power structure and involved in one way or another nearly every public figure of the time. As a vivid evocation of the declining years of Tammany Hall and of the Tenderloin in its heyday, Against the Evidence is superb entertainment. As an illustration of the corruptive effects of ambition, of justice gone awry, and of the collaboration~at the public expense~of opposing forces in urban politics, this is an important book, acutely relevant to our own time.
