Insbesonders der medizinis…che Diskurs erweist sich in der Ausbildung argumentativer Strategien im Umgang mit autoritativen Texten - wie die antiken und die Heilige Schrift - als leitend für die Transformation von Wissensansprüchen. Dabei verändert sich auch das Selbstverständnis des "natürlichen" Menschen: Es basiert auf der Einsicht in den Zusammenhang seiner biophysischen und mentalen Struktur, aus der die Einbildungskraft und das Gedächtnis resultieren und die ihn zu moralischem Handeln und zur Produktion von "Kultur" befähigt. Die Relevanz seelischer Fragen in der Physiologie, wie sie im Rahmen der naturrechtlich basierten Anthropologie des 18. Jahrhunderts gestellt werden, wird erst durch die Machtstruktur des Kantianismus unterminiert, wie das Beispiel des Umgangs mit der Angst vor dem Tod in den Quaestiones physiologicae (1794) des Mediziners Ernst Platner aufzeigt.
