Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The 15 feminist forerunners profiled in this collection are drawn from the so-called "New Woman" movement that evolved from the women born in the mid-19th century and their successors, the second generation, active at the turn of the century. They found themselves part of the first wave of feminism, women who who worked on such issues such as marital rights, women's economic independence and suffrage. Most critics and scholars have assumed this movement to be a white middle-class affair. this volume spotlights remarkable women from other backgrounds, as well as examining the work of well-known "New Women". Among them were: the African-Americans, Pauline Hopkins, co-founder of "The Colored American Magazine" and Amy Jacques vwho wrote for "The Negro World"; the Chinese-American Sui Sin Far; the Mexican-American Maria Cristina Mena; and Vera Brittain, best remembered as the author of "Testament of Youth", and pioneer of the "semi-detached marriage".Criticism of the "New Woman" is also represented here: Charlotte Perkins Gilman justified her fear of certain immigrants by the myth of "Anglo-Saxon" superiority; Dorothy Richardosn voiced her suspicions of those women who took the opportunities becoming available to them, calling them "man-trained women". While the "New Woman" may not always have been a progressive or liberal force, the variety and range of their influence in the international arena is never in doubt, making the women involved justifiably described today by the title "feminist forerunners". The so-called "new women" at the turn of the 20th century furthered the women's movement on issues such as women's suffrage and economic independence. This book examines the "feminist forerunners" from ethnic and other backgrounds, countering the view of the movement being a white, wealthy group. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book offers a new approach to fin-de-siecle and New Woman criticism, focusing on three key exponents of New Woman fiction: Sarah Grand, Olive Schreiner and Mona Caird. Heilmann pays close attention to the gaps, shifts, inconsistencies and performative acts by which each writer positioned herself ideologically and textually. She highlights the fluidity of these positions through time, and in relation to different modes of publication and target audiences. All three writers defined political activism as an expression of female creativity, and distanced themselves to varying degrees from existing artistic movements catering for a mainly male-dominated market. Heilmann shows how they drew on, mimicked, feminised and ultimately transformed traditional literary and cultural tropes and paradigms - femininity (Grand), allegory (Schreiner) and mythology (Caird) - to create a generation of New Women who imploded the patriarchal cultural and aesthetic framework in order to construct female creativity as the 'mother' principle of artistic genius. Recent years have seen a rennaissance of scholarly interest in the fin-de-siecle fiction of the New Woman. New Woman Strategies offers a new approach to the subject by focusing on the discursive strategies and revisionist aesthetics of the genre in the writings of three of its key exponents: Sarah Grand, Olive Schreiner and Mona Caird.
