Front board detached with worming at bottom edge. Boards are moderately scuffed with wear along edges and corner. Corners rounded and slightly crushed. Spine split at center with cracked spine label. Spine ends are heavily chipped with loss. Small patch of loss to rear board at bottom corner. Old hand female ownership of Abigail Potts on fly. Thomas Potts has signed the title page. Front fly, title page and first six leaves are detached along with front board. Text block is typically age toned. Scattered foxing throughout with moderate age staining present. Binding shaken, split. Gutters tender. Free of known marginalia. Please see photos. An extremely rear and scarce title in English literature. A key text in the development and history of Gothic fiction. Often cited as the archetypal Gothic novel, this work appears prominently in Jane Austen s 1817 novel Northanger Abbey, where an impressionable young woman reader comes to see friends and acquaintances as Gothic villains and victims.
