Soft cover. Condition: As New. In remarkably good shape - appears ALMOST NEW. Spiral ring bound, 132 pages, with index. Cooking Made Easy is a promotional cookery booklet published in Canada in 1947 by or on behalf of the producers of Monarch Pastry Flour, representing a well established tradition of food manufacturers producing instructional and recipe publications as a means of promoting their products while providing genuine practical value to the domestic cook. This type of branded cookery publication was extremely common throughout the first half of the twentieth century, with flour, shortening, sugar, and other food product manufacturers recognizing that a useful and attractive booklet bearing their brand name could serve as both a practical kitchen reference and an ongoing advertisement kept readily to hand in the home. The home economics framing of the publication places it within the broader educational tradition that had developed around domestic science and household management during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Home economics as a discipline sought to apply systematic and scientific principles to the running of the household, including cooking, nutrition, budgeting, and household management, and the incorporation of this language into a promotional booklet of this kind lent the publication an air of authority and educational credibility that a purely commercial recipe collection might not have conveyed. A publication dated 1947 places Cooking Made Easy in the immediate postwar period, a time of significant transition in Canadian domestic life as the country emerged from the constraints and privations of wartime rationing and began to readjust to peacetime conditions. The availability of ingredients that had been rationed or scarce during the war years was gradually returning to normal, and publications of this type would have been well timed to help domestic cooks make the most of a wider range of available ingredients while encouraging the use of specific branded products in everyday baking and cooking. The content of the booklet would typically have included a range of recipes suitable for everyday domestic baking and cooking, demonstrating the versatility and quality of Monarch Pastry Flour across a variety of applications including pastry, cakes, biscuits, and other baked goods. Practical guidance on techniques alongside the recipes would have been characteristic of the home economics approach, helping less experienced cooks build confidence and competence in the kitchen while associating those positive outcomes with the use of the featured product. Monarch was a well established brand in the Canadian flour market, and the production of educational and promotional materials of this kind was consistent with the broader marketing strategies employed by major food brands during this era to build consumer loyalty and demonstrate the practical value of their products in the domestic kitchen.
