Don't expect to see the artwork of the late Milwaukee sculptor Dick Wiken displayed i…n art museums or exhibited at art shows around the Milwaukee area. It's not that his artwork is not worth displaying or exhibiting. Rather most of Wiken's major artwork is in the form of architectural sculpture and is on exhibit 24/7 around the Milwaukee area. Wiken was known to say, "The city of Milwaukee is my gallery." Wiken grew up in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood. After graduating from Bay View High School in 1931, he began a career as a self-taught sculptor. A number of his early sculptures were exhibited at art shows, including the Annual Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors, the Wisconsin Salon of Art, the Annual Exhibition by Artists of Chicago and Vicinity, and the National Exhibition of American Art in New York City. By the 1940s Wiken had entered the world of architectural sculpture and by the 1950s was a well known and respected sculptor of wood, stone, and metal. He was also a designer for the former Mold-Craft Company and Mercury Marine. Many examples of his artwork still survive in the Milwaukee area, as well as in Fond du Lac and Marshfield, Wisconsin. His most glorious work (and his most favorite) is located in Guaymas, Mexico.
