Havanna wurde schon früh literarisch reflektiert: Erste kubanische Autoren begannen Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts, in Sittenschilderungen das städtische Leben zu beschreiben, aber auch ausländische Schriftsteller interessierten sich schon früh für das exotische Havanna (Álvarez-Tabío 2000). Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit sollen Romane analysiert und kontrastiert werden, die sich auf das Havanna in den letzten Jahrzehnten vor der kubanischen Revolution von 1959 beziehen. Im Zentrum der Analyse soll Guillermo Cabrera Infantes Tres tristes tigres stehen, da dieser als kubanischer Roman eine spezielle Innensicht der Stadt bietet, die sich von den Darstellungen der nichtkubanischen Autoren abhebt. Die Vergleichsbasis stellen Oscar Hijuelos The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love und Graham Greenes Our Man in Havanna dar, jedoch sollen auch Ernest Hemingways To Have and Have Not und Islands in the Stream sowie die Havannapassage in Max Frischs Homo Faber in die Analyse einbezogen werden, wenn sich aus diesen Romanen ein interessanter Vergleich ergibt.

Als eine der ältesten Städte Lateinamerikas und der Karibik wurde sie früh zum mythischen, fast klischeehaften Ort. Dennoch hat die komparatistische Forschung die Literatur über Havanna eher stiefmütterlich behandelt. In Anbetracht dessen beschäftigt sich diese Magisterarbeit mit der literarischen Darstellung Havannas und konzentrieiert sich dabei auf das Havanna in den letzten Jahrzehnten vor der kubanischen Revolution von 1959. Im Zentrum der Analyse steht der Roman 'Tres tristes tigres' des Kubaners Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Die Vergleichsbasis stellen die nicht-kubanischen Werke von Oscar Hijuelos, 'The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love', Graham Greene, 'Our Man in Havanna', Ernest Hemingway, 'To Have and Have Not' und 'Islands in the Stream', sowie von Max Frisch, 'Homo Faber', dar.Zentrales komparatistisches Vergleichmoment ist das in den Romanen erzeugte Bild Havannas, das anhand der Darstellung der Stadt als räumliches Phänomen und anhand der Identitätskonstruktion der Stadtgesellschaft untersucht wird. Die Arbeit analysiert, in welchen Punkten der einheimische und der fremde Blick auf die Stadt voneinander abweichen, wie sich die Havannaentwürfe der Autoren unterscheiden, und auf welche literarischen Mittel dies basiert. In allen untersuchten Werken wird auf den realen räumlichen und soziokulturellen Kontext Havannas zurückgegriffen. Die Analyse kommt jedoch zu dem Schluss, dass der Kubaner Cabrera Infante in 'Tres tristes tigres' mehr Facetten der Stadt reflektiert als es die nichtkubanischen Autoren in ihren Romanen vermögen. Cabrera Infante verfügt über eine emische Sichtweise, während die nichtkubanischen Romane aus einer Außenperspektive große Teile der Stadtrealität nicht vermitteln können. Die nicht-kubanischen Romane teilen, mit Ausnahme von Greenes 'Our Man in Havana', eine stereotype Sichtweise und entwerfen ein Stadtbild, das an der touristischen Oberfläche klebt. Markante gesellschaftliche Probleme der Großstadtwirklichkeit wie soziale Ungleichheit, Armut und Rassismus werden nicht reflektiert. Stellt Havanna bei Greene, Hemingway oder Frisch einen bloßen Handlungshintergrund dar und wird sie bei Hijuelos zu einem mythischen Konstrukt, ist Havanna bei Cabrera Infante mehr als das: Es ist die eigentliche Motivation des Romans, der von der nahenden Revolution bedrohten Stadt ein literarisches Denkmal zu setzen.
