Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A multidisciplinary guide to classroom discussion of race in the European Renaissance. Race in the European Renaissance provides both educators and students the tools they need to discuss race in the European Renaissance both in its unique historical contexts and as part of a broader continuum with racial thinking today. The volume gathers scholars of the English, French, Italian, and Iberian Renaissances to provide exercises, lesson plans, methodologies, readings, and other resources designed to bring discussions of race into a broad spectrum of classes on the early modern period, from literature to art history to the history of science. This book is designed to help educators create more diverse and inclusive syllabi and curricula that engage and address a diverse, twenty-first-century student body composed of students from a growing variety of cultural, national, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. By providing clear, concise, and diverse methodologies and analytical focuses, Race in the European Renaissance will help educators in all areas of Renaissance Studies overcome the anxiety and fear that can come with stepping outside of their expertise to engage with the topic of race, while also providing expert scholars of race in the Renaissance with new techniques and pedagogies to enhance the classroom experience of their students. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An examination of the daily grind of living with pollution in rural China and of the varying forms of activism that develop in response. An examination of the daily grind of living with pollution in rural China and of the varying forms of activism that develop in response.Residents of rapidly industrializing rural areas in China live with pollution every day. Villagers drink obviously tainted water and breathe visibly dirty air, afflicted by a variety of ailments-from arthritis to nosebleeds-that they ascribe to the effects of industrial pollution. In Resigned Activism, Anna Lora-Wainwright explores the daily grind of living with pollution in rural China and the varying forms of activism that develop in response. This revised edition offers expanded acknowledgment of the contributions of Lora-Wainwright's collaborators in China.Lora-Wainwright finds that claims of health or environmental damage are politically sensitive, and that efforts to seek redress are frustrated by limited access to scientific evidence, growing socioeconomic inequalities, and complex local realities. Villagers, feeling powerless, often come to accept pollution as part of the environment; their activism is tempered by their resignation. Drawing on fieldwork done with teams of collaborators, Lora-Wainwright offers three case studies of "resigned activism" in rural China, examining the experiences of villagers who live with the effects of phosphorous mining and fertilizer production, lead and zinc mining, and electronic waste processing. The book also includes extended summaries of the in-depth research carried out by Ajiang Chen and his team in some of China's "cancer villages," village-sized clusters of high cancer incidence. These cases make clear the staggering human costs of development and the deeply uneven distribution of costs and benefits that underlie China's economic power. "An examination of the daily grind of living with pollution in rural China and of the varying forms of activism that develop in response, revised from the original 2017 edition with a new preface"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. Drawing on over two decades of research in and on China and on extensive reviews of current scholarship, China: The Basics introduces readers to the key aspects of Chinese society, culture, and politics. The book provides an empirically rich overview of China's global position and the challenges posed by urbanisation, uneven economic development, and environmental governance. With detailed vignettes giving a flavour of everyday life experiences, China: The Basics challenges simplistic approaches to China as a monolithic political unit by illustrating the nuances of citizens' agency in different realms, including work-based and gender-based inequality, social media activism, environmental protection, illness, and healthcare. It encourages readers to reflect on the importance of scale across the themes discussed. Cross-cutting referencing between chapters enables readers to identify cross-cutting themes and to consult chapters in their preferred order.China: The Basics nurtures a critical and reflexive approach and provides readers with a conceptual toolkit for engaging with new developments constructively. It will be essential reading for students, lecturers, and anyone curious about contemporary China.
