Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Superstar Pharaohs was the exhibition presented by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, in partnership with MUCEM (Marseille), in 2022, the year that marks the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter and the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphs by Jean-Francois Champollion. The exhibition catalogue includes an introductory text written by the co-curator Frederic Mougenot, in which he reveals the reflections that led him to create the exhibition. The introduction is followed by six essays on different themes, ranging from antiquity to the present day: Fayza Haikal writes about the link between modern day Egyptians and the civilisation of the Pharaohs; Bernard Mathieu focuses on the Egyptians' knowledge of their history; Michael Chaveau looks at the presence of the Pharaohs in Greco-Roman literature; Simon Connor explores the impact of images and their destruction in constructing the history of the Egyptian monarchy; Jean-Marcel Humbert discusses the phenomenon of Egyptomania; and Joao Carvalho Dias, co-curator of the exhibition and deputy director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, reveals the relationship that Calouste Gulbenkian developed with Howard Carter, which was fundamental in establishing the Egyptian art section of the Gulbenkian collection. The rest of the publication is, like the exhibition, divided into three sections: the first, 'Three Thousand Years of History and a Few Memorable Reigns', seeks to outline the profile of the Pharaohs who were regarded, in their time, as worthy of being remembered for posterity. The second section, 'What Remains of the Pharaohs? History and Legends', looks at the way the memory of some of these figures was recovered, and at the same time transformed, by the literature of Greco-Roman antiquity, giving rise to myths that survived for centuries. The final section, 'Return of the Pharaohs', reveals how the birth of the discipline of Egyptology led to new scientific knowledge of Ancient Egypt, which also paved the way for the rediscovery of some Pharaohs, who were thus propelled into stardom. As well as featuring abundant illustrations of the works on display throughout the texts, the publication also includes a section of chronological references related to Ancient Egypt and a list of all the Pharaohs in history. AUTHORS: Frederic Mougenot is a cultural heritage curator responsible for the Antiquities and Ceramics collections at the Palais des Beaux-arts in Lille, and was formerly Domestic Life theme manager at Mucem. At Mucem, he served on committees for the exhibitions Le Monde a l'envers: Carnavals et mascarades d'Europe et de Mediterranee (2014) and Migrations divines (2015). He was co-curator of Bonne fortune et mauvais sorts at the Abbaye de Daoulas (Finistere) in 2016. His research is largely focused on deities and religious practices in ancient Egypt. Joao Carvalho Dias is an art historian and researcher in the field of collecting at ARTIS - the Institute of Art History, University of Lisbon. As Curator of European books, drawings and prints for the Gulbenkian Collection (201422), he published European Illuminated Manuscripts in the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection (2020). He was the former Deputy Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. SELLING POINTS: . Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Trade PB. 8vo. Armand Colin, Paris, France. 1988. 349 pages. Illustrated. Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The personality of the King of Egypt is multiple; it is at the same time solar (because he is the son of Re) , celestial (the living king is a Horus, a figure hovering over the vault of Heaven) and Osirian (the dead and resurrected king becomes an Osiris). He is an intercessor between the gods and men; for the former, he ensures the accomplishment of worship; for the latter, he is the guarantor of prosperity, justice and victory. The Ancients have particularly retained two theological themes which found the pharaonic power. The sovereign is first a child-king and a god-king; stories and images have transmitted to us the representation of the theogamies from which the sovereigns are carnally issued; similarly we know that the pharaoh remained the divine child who is seen ritually breastfed by a goddess. Finally, the warlord king originates from a world of hunters, at a time when man and animal were not yet separate species. This work is a treatise on pharaonic royalty, resituated in relation to other so-called sacred royalty: ancient Asian theocracies, monarchies of Indo-European societies with a trifunctional organization, traditional African royalty. Marie-Ange Bohème is a lecturer at the U. F. R. Of History at the University of Paris IV. Annie Forgeau is a lecturer at the U. F. R. Of Art and Archaeology at the University of Paris IV. King Ramses II as a child, 19th dynasty b (c. 1290-1224). Paris, Musée du Louvre. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 349 pages.
