Hardcover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. Very rare Anthony Bourdain SIGNED Les Halles Cookbook with Tony's hand drawn large chef on the signed title page. There are only around five known copies of Bourdain's books where he included a sketch with his autograph. This is likely the most impressive of his chef sketches in circulation. Condition notes: ACCEPTABLE- dust jacket is NOT the original (from another 1st print copy of Les Halles. Shows some minor dark spots on the front and some wear such as crinkling near top of spine). Cover also shows soiling particulate (like a sandy texture) around the bottom of spine and at least one or two stain/ blotch mark spots. Outer edges of pages show signs of foxing (noticed when book is closed), a nick spot on the spine of the cover and some other cover wear. Pages smell fine. Beth Aretsky signed the back of the flyleaf page. Bourdain wrote about her in Kitchen Confidential- "A long-time associate, Beth, who likes to refer to herself as the 'Grill Bitch', excelled at putting loudmouths and fools into their proper place." After contacting Beth, the David she gifted the book to was Chef David Feola from Ember & Ash (in Philadelphia). She was his neighbor in Rome, NY and was actually his babysitter for a time. I later reached out to David on one of his social profiles, and he confirmed that the drawing was in the hand of Tony. It was a *warning "for being a young chef"! More confirmation this was drawn by Bourdain- the cigarette smoking chef here matches the style/ body position of the "skull" chef drawing in an older paperback copy of Kitchen Confidential (someone on reddit who purchased this copy claimed he bought it for 3,000). As well, the drawing here has mobster/ assassin vibes (like the themes in the first two novels he wrote- Bone in the Throat and Gone Bamboo). *Tony as an artist- He sent a comic book that he drew, illustrated, and written to a literary magazine in 1980. He has said at a Comic Con event in 2012 (on a panel for Get Jiro) that his dream for almost his whole childhood and teenage years was to make comics. He "wanted to be an underground cartoonist", and "was a collector and fan boy from really early on- early '60s on". Ships from MN via UPS 2nd day air Mon-Fri, securely packaged and with signature confirmation in the US. Signed by Author(s).
