LIKELY THE ONLY COMPLETE COPY OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY (and extraordinarily rare!) PUBLICATION, THE MASTER COPY OF THE FIRST MANUAL FOR PURSUING CIVIL RIGHTS CASES, PRESERVED BY JACK GREENBERG, WHO CONCEIVED OF THE PROJECT. Volume I: viii, 1-198, 198/1-14, 199-375 pp; Volume II: vi (misnumbered viii, but complete), 377-487, 487/1-78, 488-606, 606/1-24, 607-723; 725-817, 602/1-58. Jack Greenberg initiated this project shortly after taking the reins of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (which, being non-profit, had already detached itself from the for-profit N.A.A.C.P.) As Greenberg notes in the preface, civil rights law was becoming a specialty, like other branches of the law, and thus needed specialized guidebooks. The Fund's lawyers, guided by the principles set forth in these manuals, went on to win virtually all of the important cases of the civil rights era. Only a few dozen copies were issued, and most of them lack some or all of the important interpolations (see collation.) Furthermore, since this manual was printed for use in a seminar and issued in three-ring binders, sections were often removed. And finally, the third volume was issued last, in a tiny edition, and is exceptionally rare. Fortunately Jack Greenberg preserved a complete copy, with all of the interpolations, for personal reference. Upon his retirement as a Columbia Law School professor (in 2015, at age 90), he gave this set to his son. 4to. In the original leatherette three-ring binders, all of which are perfectly functional. Some wear to binders, but still solid. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT, with a few manuscript corrections in Greenberg's hand. AN ABSOLUTELY CENTRAL DOCUMENT FOR THE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, AND OF ALL LATER CIVIL RIGHTS LITIGATION.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Magazine. 105 bound volumes and 98 individual issues in wrappers. Octavos. A long run from 1860-1933 of this famous Victorian literary magazine known for debuting the works of many important English writers. The set includes volumes 1-29 (January 1860-June 1874), 34-114 (July 1876-December 1916), and volumes 125-129 (January 1922-June 1924) bound in contemporary publisher's cloth or full linen boards. Also included are 98 monthly issues (numbers 337-450) in the original printed wrappers (July 1924-December 1933, lacking July 1930, and May, November, and December 1931). Among the many complete works included in this long run are the first appearances of *Framley Parsonage*, *The Claverings*, and two other novels by Trollope, as well as Thackeray's *The Adventures of Philip* and his complete column: "Roundabout Papers." Other works from the 1860s include *Romola* by George Eliot, *Wives and Daughters* by Elizabeth Gaskell, *Armadale* by Wilkie Collins, *Unto This Last* by John Ruskin, *Culture and Anarchy* by Matthew Arnold, and Tennyson's "Tithonus." Works from the 1870s and 1880s include *The Adventures of Harry Richmond* by George Meredith, *Daisy Miller* and *Washington Square* by Henry James, *The Pavilion on the Links* and *The Merry Men* by Robert Louis Stevenson, and the first 29 chapters of *Far from the Madding Crowd* by Thomas Hardy. *J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement* was first published anonymously by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1884, and *The White Company* first appeared under his name in 1891-92. *The Lagoon* by Joseph Conrad appeared in 1897. *Cornhill* maintained its high reputation up through the 1930s. Works from the early 20th Century include poems and prose pieces by Robert Bridges, Thomas Hardy, W.B. Yeats, Ford Madox Ford, and Katherine Tynan. The magazine also featured illustrations by George du Maurier, Frederic Leighton, Edwin Landseer, John Everett Millais, and other leading artists. Most were engraved on wood by the Brothers Dalziel, and include numerous full-page and folding plates. Most volumes from 1860 to 1901 are bound in contemporary publisher's cloth (with some rebound in full cloth), volumes from 1902 to 1924 are rebound in full cloth (most with the original wrappers included), and single monthly issues from the 1920s and early 1930s are in the original printed wrappers. Ex-library set with bookplates, most 19th Century volumes with a small embossed stamp on the title pages and a perforated stamp on the plates. The earliest volumes are chipped at the spines and edges, a few with split spines and detached boards, else overall a good set of bound volumes; the single issues in wraps are unmarked and very good or better. A very nice assemblage of notable 19th Century literature and illustrations.

Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown sheep, marbled boards, raised bands, black calf spine label. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $9000.1762 greatly expanded and revised edition of the same year's first edition of Benezet's pioneering work"the first practical manual for attacking the slave trade"a key influence on African-born abolitionists Quobna Ottabah Cugoano and Olaudah Equiano, together in one volume with Franklin and Hall's Philadelphia printing of the first American edition of Law's Extract from a Treatise, and two other Quaker works, an especially rare copy with owner inscriptions traced to Benezet, given by him to a fellow Quaker woman."Benezet is the pivotal figure in the 18th-century campaign to abolish slavery and the slave trade." While it would take the Civil War and a constitutional amendment to end legal slavery, "the campaign to abolish transatlantic slavery effectively began in Philadelphia and at its epicenter was Anthony Benezet." In this, his first work on Africa, Benezet made "his greatest contribution to antislavery rhetoric." He changed the argument "from an emphasis on religious teaching and philosophical principles to an emphasis on empirical facts about Africans in Africa, how they were treated by European traders, and depicts them as fully human, capable of great achievement and great suffering." "Benezet had a tremendous influence on Benjamin Franklin" (Jackson & Kozel, 62), and was quoted "at length in the great 1792 Parliamentary debates about the abolition of the slave trade" (Encyclopedia of Anti-Slavery and Abolition I:88).This first revised and expanded edition of A Short Account, issued within months of the same year's shorter first edition, added nearly 30 pages of documentation and "proposed the first comprehensive plan to emancipate enslaved Africans in the colonies, reimburse them for their labor, and offer them a path to citizenship in doing so he produced the first practical manual for attacking the slave trade" (Crosby, Complete Antislavery Writings, 1-2, 26-7). Benezet's work "also greatly influenced the famed African-born abolitionists, Quobna Ottabah Cugoano and Olaudah Equiano. Both of these men were kidnapped as children from Africa and relied on Benezet's writings to enhance their knowledge of their homelands" (Jackson and Kozel, Quakers and Their Allies, 64). Benezet had been a member of the Overseers of the Press for the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Friends, but the Board of Overseers "did not approve of the first two editions of A Short Account, so Benezet published it anonymously. From this experience it had become clear to him that he would have to move beyond the province of Pennsylvania, so A Short Account became his last work addressed only to 'the inhabitants of Pennsylvania'" (Jackson, Let This Voice Be Heard, 64).The volume also features Franklin and Hall's very scarce Philadelphia printing of Extract from a Treatise (1750) by English clergyman William Law, who "was tutor to the historian Gibbon" (Curtis, 146). This is the first American edition of Law's Treatise, which also appears as the first title in the same year's Collection of Devotional Tracts assembled by Benezet "during the spring of 1760 in a lot of 500 copies for distribution to those of a religious disposition" (Miller 731). This volume's t. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Book. 421 x 303mm. A complete set of six volumes (1988-1991) of this richly illustrated, portfolio periodical with each issue's title letterpress printed on the front cover, together with different coloured end papers. The colophon is printed in a grey, red and black constructivist design on white stock across all volumes. Each volume was published in a limited edition of one hundred and fifty copies, except for Number 2, which was produced in an edition of 120 numbered copies, and Number 3 is not numbered. Blank Page was a biannual portfolio publication, designed and edited by Philip Dobree, with Adrian Self acting as literary editor. It is notable for its display of original works of pure abstraction (many signed and numbered), with critical texts interspersed throughout by significant theorists, writers and designers - these essays have been designed with a strict red and black constructivist aesthetic in mind, continuing the graphic style that unites all volumes. For example, in Volume 4, a cut-out black and white image by Douglas Allsop has been embedded with Geoff Bennington's text, "Not One". Presented as original multiples, the works featured include: lithographs; screen prints; relief prints; woodcuts; collages, etc. Volume 6, the final publication, is particularly rich in its gathering of many leading practitioners of pure abstraction, such as Charles Biederman, Cesar Domela, Anthony Hill, Michael Kidner, Francois Morellet and George Rickey. Taken individually, and as a collective series, Blank Page provides an impressive and extensive survey of the plastic arts and European constructivist design made during the period of its publication. Each portfolio performs like a mini, self-contained exhibition, with contributions by: Number One (unnumbered on cover, gold on green): Selima Hill, Michael Symmons Roberts, David Powell, Alan Bold, Patricia Conolly, Nicholas Rawson, A. Few, if any, of those appear to include the Benezet pamphlet, first published in 1759. Benezet, a French-born Pennsylvanian, was a prominent early abolitionist. A brief online search suggests that all or most of the Glover signatories lived in or around Haddonfield, N.J., where some of them appear to have owned a fulling mill (for wool). Friends of Photography was a nonprofit organization started by Ansel Adams and others in 1967 to promote photography as a fine art. During its existence the organization held at least 330 photography exhibitions at its galleries in Carmel and San Francisco, California, and it published a lengthy series of monographs under the name Untitled. Untitled was published Friends of Photography from 1972 to 1994. A total of 58 numbered publications were issued, first as a small magazine format and later as a series of booklets and full-size books. Numbers 1-10 displayed the series name and issue number on the cover, but as the publications became more specialized each number was titled independently in addition to the series name. The smallest publication in the series was Number 1, with 10 pages, and the largest was Number 43, with 156 pages. Many of the publications were catalogs of exhibitions held at the Friends of Photography gallery in Carmel, California. The publication featured many famous photographers, including Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Harry Callahan, Roy DeCarava, Lee Friedlander, Mary Ellen Mark, Aaron Siskind, Paul Strand, Brett Weston, and Edward Weston. It also offered perspectives on newer photographic trends like plastic cameras and the influence of pop-art.The series of Untitled monographs includes: 1: Edward Weston, Dody W. A Memoir of the Late Colonel A.W. Durnford. Edited by his Brother, Lieut.-Colonel E[dward] Durnford, Part Author of the ?History of the Zulu War and its Origin? Mounted ?Woodburytype? photograph portrait frontispiece and folding map, closed tear without loss, archival tape repair verso. Front hinges a little cracked, but overall a very good copy, largely unopened, in the original red decorative cloth, rubbed and somewhat marked. xviii, errata slip, 406pp. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, SABIB II, p.131. Scarce. Account of Durnford's service in South Africa, an apologia edited by his brother; ?The court of inquiry into the loss of the camp duly attributed most of the blame for the defeat to Durnford's rash conduct. This was hardly surprising since Chelmsford's staff were determined to make Durnford the scapegoat for the disaster. His brother Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Durnford and Frances Colenso endeavoured through their writings and public lobbying to rehabilitate his reputation. They did not wholly succeed. Durnford's heroic death did much to blunt public criticism of him, but there can be little doubt that his actions contributed materially to the disaster at Isandlwana. As Sir Theophilus Shepstone wrote of him, Durnford was ?as plucky as a lion but as imprudent as a child?.? [ODNB].

Hornblower & Maberly: For Infrignement on Mr. Watt's Patent for the Improvement on the Steam Engine By Joseph Bramah, engineer. London. John Stockdale. 1797. 90 pages. None available. Bramah wrote a book on locks in 1785 and patented several items in the late 1700s. Watt's patent on the steam engine was in 1769. Hornblower invented a compound steam engine in 1781, but it was judged to be an infringement on Watt's patent, so he was not able to pursue it, even though it was more efficient and more powerful than Watt's. This short book is a detailed explanation of why Hornblower's work is original and why the judgement against him should be reconsidered. ** A Reply to the Monthly Reviewers; and some letters between them and the Author By A Suffolk Freeholder.
