Fine Binding. Condition: Near Fine. None (illustrator). A finely bound set of this scarce history regarding the Ottoman empire and Turkey. Finely bound in uniform calf bindings, and held in a custom slipcase.Being two volumes with the signatures, [alpha]-[epsilon]8, [zeta]4, A-2L8; 2A-2Z8, 2a-2z8,3A8. Title page to volume II is provided in facsimile. Collated, lacking the 8 prefatory leaves to volume II. In the original Latin. This work is formed from Antoine Gueffroy's original account which has here been continued by a variety of authors including N Honigerum Koningshof. Gueffroy or Geufraey was a French knight in Rhodes. Following the fall of Rhodes he travelled in the Levant. This is a detailed description of the Ottoman empire. It explores the Ottoman system, its structure, workings, grandeur and strengths and weaknesses with accuracy. It also contains Pietro Bizzarri's 'Cyprium Bellum' and 'Pannocicum Bellum'. 'Cyprium Bellum is an account of the Fourth Ottoman Venetian War. A fine work dealing with the Levant. In full calf bindings, with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional marginal gloss by a prior owner, drawing attention to certain passages. Otherwise, just the occasional light spot to pages. Near Fine. book.
