Deusing challenges Sylvian iatrochemical doctrine and engages broader debates concerning metabolism, bodily fluids, gastric fermentation, and the mechanisms of nourishment within the human organism. References to fermentation, effervescence, circulation, and digestive transformation reveal the transitional state of medicine during the Scientific Revolution, where Galenic medicine, chemistry, and emerging mechanistic physiology collided in often gloriously argumentative fashion. Seventeenth-century physicians truly treated academic disagreement as a blood sport with footnotes. The text is particularly notable for its engagement with the chemical and physiological theories surrounding digestion and internal bodily processes shortly after the circulation of blood had become widely debated across Europe following Harvey's discoveries. Deusing discusses fermentation in the stomach, transformation of chyle into blood, and vascular transport, touching upon themes that anticipate later developments in physiology and biochemistry. The work also contains extensive prefatory material attacking Sylvius and defending Deusing's own medical positions. Condition & Binding: Bound in contemporary limp vellum with early manuscript spine titling. Binding remains structurally sound with moderate soiling, discoloration, edge wear, and rubbing consistent with age and use; vellum somewhat toned and warped as typical. Early shelf label remnants and old paper adhesions present to covers and spine. Internally remarkably crisp overall, with clean and legible text, moderate age toning, scattered foxing, and occasional minor dampstaining or browning. A few leaves exhibit small edge chips or minor wear without substantial text loss. Overall- fair to good.
