Condition: very good. 1st Edition. 116pp. Bound in 19th century half morocco and pattern paper boards. Two old library stamps on title page along with a small ink number. A clean attractive copy of a very scarce title. Otto Krisch was the engineer on board "Tegetthoff", the expedition ship of the Austro-Hungarian North Pole comm…anded by Karl Weyprecht and Julius Payer. Beset in the ice in the northern Barents Sea in October 1872 the ship drifted north in the ice until within sight of the previously unknown islands of Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa (Franz-Josef Land). In the spring of 1874 Payer led a sledge party that explored much of the western part of the archhipelago, as far north as Mys Fligeli (Cape Fligeley), Ostrov Rudol'fa (Rudolph island), the northern tip of the archipelago. In the fall the ship was abandoned and her crew retreated south by sledge and boat. Krisch died of tuberculosis on board ship on 16 March 1874, and was buried on Ostrov Vil'cheka (Wilczek Island).

Juni 1845 in Paclavice, Mähren; 16. März 1874 vor Franz-Josef-Land) war ei…n österreichischer Polarfahrer. Als Maschinenunteroffizier diente Krisch danach auf verschiedenen Kriegsschiffen und wurde nach Kriegsende Maschinist bei der Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft Adria in Triest. Dort gewann ihn Carl Weyprecht für die Teilnahme als Offizier an einer Expedition in die Arktis. Die besonderen Bedingungen im Polargebiet waren zu dieser Zeit überhaupt nicht bekannt. Die mit einer Dampfmaschine ausgerüstete hölzerne Schonerbark Admiral Tegetthoff legte am 13. Juni 1872 in Geestemünde ab. Während der Reise erkrankte Krisch an einer unerkannten Lungentuberkulose, an der er schließlich am 16. März 1874 verstarb. Sein Leichnam wurde am 19. März auf der Wilczek-Insel in der vermutlich nördlichsten Grabstätte der Welt bestattet. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 290.
