Cloth-backed and tipped, with the original wrapper covers pasted on a lovely restoration. Fine condition. __+__ ANTONIADI, Eugene Michael (Eugenius Mihail) (1870-1944), superior planetary observer, especially of Mars, was founding member of the British Astronomical Association and long an assistant to Camille Flammarion, who contributed hundreds of papers and several books to the astronomical cannon. The present paper takes us further down the longish road to his disposal of the idea of the Martian "canals", which began a complicated life following Schiaparell's naming them ("canali" in 1877) , especially at the hands of Percival Lowell, who took the new observations from the very crude first map (by Maedler) in 1840 to his own observations confirming his belief in intelligent design and civilization of the planet. Antoniadi was a long-time supporter of the Lowell interpretation until his own observations of 1909, when he became convinced that the "canals" were at best optical illusions. ".the nature of the Lowellian network was an illusion, the result of eyes straining tosee myriads of unresolvable details, or giving illusory hard edges to intersections of half-tones of different intensity."-- R. Part II: The Meudon years Authors", Journal: Journal of the British Astronomical Association, vol.103, no.5, p.219-227 __+__ Earlier (in 1909) in the Compte Rendus Antoniadi had poetically dispatched the Lowellian canals so: "In this nomenclature, we have not understood the fugitive straight lines, often called channels, which are visible only during a fraction of second and which can be due to an illusion. These first observations do not confirm the existence of a network of geometric straight lines, crisscrossing in all directions. Even, by very calm images, we have recognized, not in a fleeting way but for several consecutive seconds, a structure of continental regions quite different from the previous one. These regions are shown covered with a large amount of greyish mottling, irregular, complex and gnarled, which no artist can render." __+__ The Antoniadi map published in this volume was made during the opposition of 1926 and utilized Antoniadi's most accurate observations of the planet to date. An astronomer of Greek origin, Eugène Antoniadi (1870-1944) was one of the great specialists on the planet Mars. He was deputy director of the observatory created by Camille Flammarion in Juvisy-sur-Orge. Antoniadi devotes a chapter to the illusion of Martian canals, the non-existence of which he proved.
