La Costa d'Amalfi, pressoché coincidente con il territorio dell'omonimo Ducato, costituisce in epoca medievale un vero e proprio crocevia degli scambi tra Occidente e Oriente, ponte tra le culture affermatesi nel Mediterra…neo. Le principali manifestazioni artistiche presenti sono state ben prese in considerazione dagli studiosi. Mancava, però, un lavoro che cercasse di individuare, attraverso di esse, gli orientamenti culturali nel corso dei secoli; che costituisse da questo punto di vista riferimento per definirne l'identità e le relazioni per una più esaustiva conoscenza. Un'operazione del genere si rivela ben ardua allorché ci si confronta, come nel caso di Amalfi, con un mito ampiamente consolidato, basato sulla floridezza dei commerci e sulla forza delle influenze artistiche e culturali, tale da ingenerare l'aspettativa di un'enclave bizantina o musulmana in Occidente. Ma le cose stanno così solo nel mito e nell'immaginazione. L'analisi concreta delle determinazioni storiche articolata per periodi, tra i secc. X-XIII, rileva una stratigrafia fatta di pieni e di vuoti, di eccellenze e di mediocrità strettamente connessi agli andamenti congiunturali. In questo modo emergono significativamente le differenze e i cambiamenti che interessano cicli artistici e, in parallelo, culturali di assoluto rilievo quali quello inerente alle porte bronzee bizantine, agli affreschi altomedievali - da S. Maria de Olearia alla Cripta dell'Annunziata di Minuta -, alla scultura, attestata da una vera e propria bottega, erede dei maestri attivi a Salerno con gli amboni Guarna e D'Aniello, e presente anche in forme di grande forza espressiva come, ad esempio, nel gruppo della Deposizione del Duomo di Scala. L'affermarsi del potere angioino e della nuova capitale Napoli nel 1282 innesta un processo irreversibile di centro e periferia che progressivamente svuota i territori di ogni autonomia rendendoli a riflesso partecipi di quanto si produce altrove. E nel corso del Trecento e della stagione gotica gli effetti di questa dinamica si dispiegano ampiamente in tutte le branche artistiche. Le ultime espressioni sono offerte dall'oreficeria con le due straordinarie mitre di Scala ed Amalfi. Libro.
