The themes of shipwreck, illness, and death occur alongside intense alertness of the skin to the prick of an insulin injection, the feel of salt on things that flash through the slit of a skirt, or the body sensitized to the prickle of a woolly blanket on a hot night. This absolute physical aliveness causes the image of the Virgin to give way to a shipwrecked man's vision of a bar with pints of beer coming towards him over the sea. The journey to the fabled Galapagos Islands, where of course Darwin discovered the secret of the history of flesh, is both physical and symbolic. The book is a celebration of life by a man approaching his own death, a last gift to the world.Lima and its beaches, Peruvian Amazonia and its animals, France and Virginia, the poet's daughters and grandchildren, also appear, marking intense joy at the borders of catastrophe.

Tal idea interes fue una constante en las obras de los ideologos criollos del siglo XIX marcadas por la pretension de alcanzar un mejoramiento socia…l.En la primera mitad de dicho siglo Felix Varela, Jose Antonio Saco, Jose de la Luz y Caballero y Domingo del Monte tuvieron un significativo interes por esta cuestion.Nadie mejor que el propio Jose Antonio para explicar el proposito y la urgencia de esta Memoria sobre la vagancia en Cuba: Tan graves son algunas de las enfermedades morales que padece la isla de Cuba, que la Sociedad Patriotica de La Habana se apresura a buscarles remedio; y llamando la atencion publica hacia un objeto de tanto interes, desea que expliquen en una Memoria las causas de la vagancia en esta Isla, y que se propongan las ideas mas oportunas para atacarla en su origen, mejorando la educacion domestica y publica, e indicando tambien objetos a que puedan aplicarse los individuos que se hallan en tal caso. A primera vista parece, que este trabajo debiera dividirse en tres partes, explicando en la primera las causas de la vagancia; exponiendo en la segunda, los medios de atacarla en su origen; e indicando en la tercera, los objetos a que puedan destinarse los vagos: pero como la primera y segunda partes estan intimamente enlazadas, y su separacion no solo cortaria el hilo de las ideas, sino que me forzaria a volver sobre mis pasos, haciendo frecuentes repeticiones, me he determinado a refundirlas en una sola, pues que exponiendo al pie de cada causa los medios de removerla, doy mas enlace y brevedad a esta Memoria.
