In 1860 he was commander general of the Eastern Department, but in 1862 he resigned for health reasons. In January 1869 he was sent back to Cuba to suppress an insurrection which was called the "Ten Years' War. Although it failed to achieve Cuban independence it spawned a number of important later Cuban leaders, including José Martí, Fernando Figueredo, and Tomás Estrada Palma.
