Les auteurs s'étaint rendus en diverses villes d'Europe du Nord et avaient visité plusieurs grands observatoires afin de tester des baromètres construits par le célèbre Fortin. Cet ouvrage contient le description des différents modèles examinés, et des observations sur l'emploi de ces appareils pour des applications de précision. Auguste Bravais enseigna la physique à l'Ecole Polytechnique. Tiré-à-part en bon état enrichi d'un envoi autographe.

Edition Française de ce premier ouvrage important sur la thermométrie clinique, et le seul traitement scientifique du sujet avant Wunderlich. L'ouvrage contient une planche d'une comparaison de 15 échelles thermométriques différentes qui accompagne le deuxième essai du volume. Le traducteur a également joint trois autres essais et articles relatifs à la thermodynamique. Martine mourut aux Amériques lors d'une expédition en 1741 et ne vit pas le succès de ses recherches. Cette série d'essais fut la première critique sérieuse du thermomètre à 80 degrés de Réaumur. Il critique les méthodes et les conclusions de ce dernier avec des arguments bien en avance sur son temps. Rousseurs.

Le Verrier était membre d'une commission chargée d'étudier un projet de loi ouvrant aux particuliers le service du télégraphe, car l'utilisation de ce moyen de communication dont l'implantation ne remonte en France qu'à 1845, était réservé jusqu'alors aux pouvoirs publics. Le présent texte contient les suggestions de cette commission, et plusieurs documents relatifs à l'implantation du télégraphe à l'étranger, en particulier aux Etats-Unis d'Amérique.
