Original black cloth, backstrip gone. Rubbed at edges. Significant foxing and staining, particularly at edges of pages. 256, [8] pp., 10 plates, 5 maps (2 small folding). While designated as Part I only, this work stands by itself. A note on p.256 indicates that Part II, the Middle, Southern, and Western States was in press and would follow shortly. In addition to all of the text describing the various cities, towns and routes in New York, New England and southern Canada, there is a Caution to English Travellers that "the introduction into England of American or other foreign printed editions of the works of British Authors, in which the copy right subsists, is totally prohibited. Travellers who are often tempted by the cheapness of the American books, will therefore bear in mind that even a single copy is contraband, and is lable to seizure at the English Custom-house.".
