Half Calf and Marbled. Condition: Good. Engravings as Flaxman (illustrator). Paris: Chez Jean-Francois Bastien, 1822. Nouvelle Traduction, Avec Le Latin En Regard, Par J.A. Maury [New Translation, with Latin Original Text on facing versos, by J.A. Maury]. Imprimerie D'Ange Clo. Line engravings with tissue guards throughout both volumes. Two volumes, octavo; vol. 1 [6] xxvii + 370 pp.; vol 2 [6], 426 pp. Half calf with marbled boards, gilt and black compartments and lettering on spine; marbled endpapers; all page edges marbled. One example in each copy, at the front pastedown, of the artful bookplate of author Kirby Flower Smith. Leather worn and soiled with three joints cracked; spine ends perished and two small spine pieces missing as well from Vol 1; light internal foxing, rarely affecting the abundant plates, and scarcely so when that occurs. A scarce antiquarian two-volume rendition, in French on rectos with Latin original text on versos opposite, of "The Golden Ass" (or, "Metamorphosis") of Apulius. The earliest known classic tale of its type, that being a rather zesty account of the ribald Thessalian adventures of a young Greek aristocrat, Lucius. Eventually, Lucius betrays a priestess - as much of a no-no then as now - and is transformed into an ass. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Written by Apulius in the second century A.D. Replete with [uncredited] enchanting line-drawing engravings after the fashion of Flaxman; the stylistic novelty, particularly with illustrations of ancient Greek scenes, carries more than a bit of magic. For the bookplate collector, there are two of Kirby Flower Smith's stylish plates, one in each volume. Smith authored The Elegies of Albius Tibullus, Numa and Egeria, The Tale of Gyges and the King of Lydia, and other titles. Uncommon set. L-37n.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good.
