Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 4-1/8" x 6-5/8", iv + 119pp + 1p Errata, printed and bound with the book. Printed on off white alkaline paper and bound in signatures in purple cloth boards with the title block stamped in gilt on the front panel and, presumably, spine, but this latter is completely obscured due to fading / age discoloration. Front panel suffers from numerous large blotches suggesting previous exposure to moisture, which however has left no structural marks. Otherwise, minor corner bumping (the top fore corner on the back is abraded) and general shelf wear to cover. Binding is gently cocked. Top edge is age discolored. A previous owner's name and date (Feb 7. 1877) in ink on front free end paper, and the bright yellow sticker of Philip, Son and Nephew, in Liverpool), is still affixed to the top left corner of the front paste down. The fore edges of the first two sheets are a bit crumpled / creased towards the fore edge. Pages are clean and bright and unmarked.

Condition: Good. 1865. No Edition Remarks. 112 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth covered boards with gilt lettering. Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing. Previous owner's label to front paste-down. Heavy cracking at the hinges with exposed binding material. Some occasional moderate cracking to gutters throughout, binding is shaky. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends, with fraying cloth and small splits. Gilt lettering has become dull. Sunning to spine. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Book has a slight forward lean.

Volume I contains mainly verses by Alexander Pope: 'particularly' I Windsor Forest, II Essay on Criticism, III Rape of the Lock, IV Ode on St. Cecilia's Day, V Verses to the Memory of a Lady, VI To Mr Jervas, with Fresnoy's Art of Painting, VII To a Young Lady, with the Works of Voiture, and VIII Eloisa to Abelard. Volume II, Miscellaneous Poems, Translations and Imitations, contains works by a number of authors with the most significant being Dr. William King, Mr. Elisha Fenton, the Revd. Mr. Broome, the Revd. Mr. James Ward and the Reverend Mr. Archdeacon Danie. Volume II contains an index to the contents of both volumes. Both volumes are bound in contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine. The title and volume labels on the spine are lost although the volume numbers are blind stamped to the spine. The spines have chipping at the top and bottom and some edge cracking. The corners are bumped with some rubbing. Wale Family bookplate to the front pastedowns and the second volume has another family name, Lady Wale, to the front free endpaper. Browning around the edges of the endpapers. Creasing to the top corners of pages 37 to 62 in the first volume. Two sections of the text protrude a little from the rest of the text block in volume II. There is also some browning to the title pages and the frontispiece in Volume I which is a portrait of Pope and the pages are browned but are otherwise generally unmarked.

On offer is a super archive of original, manuscript autographed letters, hand drawn illustrations, photographs and ephemera dated early 1900s through 1947 related to the Niger Mission in Western Equatorial Africa of the Church Missionary Society and specifically the celebrated Archdeacon Sidney Richard Smith (1873-1946) and his wife Mabel who were Christian missionaries in one of the most difficult missions on earth. Here is the breakdown: a) Three manuscript diary leaves in Archdeacon S.R. Smith's hand, six pages, undated; b) 20 manuscript letters in Mabel K. Smith's hand, 123 pages, dated March 1911 to April 1922; c) Two pages, ALS from Alfred Smith to Mabel and Sidney Smith. C.M.S. Oshagbo 16th Aug. 1918; d) 17 manuscript letters to "Dr. Smith" from various, between May 1939 to June 1943, 22 pages; e) Typed ALS to Mrs Smith in sympathy on the death of Archdeacon S.R.
