The scrutiny of the presence of the father in literature is a task that can hardly claim to be exhaustive. It is so extensive and suggestive its incidence in the letters, that it could well deserve the widest variety of approaches: in the narrative, in the poetry, and in the drama. In Hispanic, English or French literatures; in the nineteenth or twentieth century; or further still, going to certain essences: that of the odious father, for example, dominating, always normative, who evades, qualifies, represses and screams (Letter to father, Kafka), and that of the other whose memory we recall (Capias to the death of his father, Jorge Manrique) or perhaps arouses, if the feeling is inflicted by a tragic fate, a mandate of revenge (Hamlet, Shakespeare). Few are the writers who have subtracted from the temptation of the theme, without excluding the Chileans. -----El escrutinio de la presencia del padre en la literatura es tarea que dificilmente puede pretender ser exhaustiva. Es tan extensa y suge- rente su incidencia en las letras, que bien podria merecer la mas amplia variedad de aproximaciones: en la narrativa, en la poesia, en la dramaturgia; en las literaturas hispanicas, inglesas o francesas; en el siglo XIX o el XX; o, mas lejos aun, yendo a ciertas esencias: la del odioso padre, por ejemplo, dominador, siempre normativo, "Polifemo de ojo ubicuo", que evahia, califica, reprime y grita (Carta al padre, Kafka), o la de aquel otro cuya memoria reverenciamos (CapIas a la muerte de su padre, Jorge Manrique) o acaso suscita, si el sentimiento esta emponzofiado por un sino tragico, un mandato de venganza (Hamlet, Shakespeare).
