Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. ARMORIAL SHIELDS. An unusual collection of 13 engraved plates, identical, unnumbered, and each with twelve blank 'shields' for the owner to create their own armorial. The shields are set within a decorative framework, and the first five have been completed in pen and ink by an early owner. The families are Poulle, Rademaker, Edinge, Dugardin and de Buure. In very good clean condition, and bound in late 19th century linen backed marbled boards. The plates do not have any note of engraver or printer. 300mm x 258mm. Dutch? c1790. ~ Origin and dating of the paper is possible on the basis of the watermark "I Villedary" with a Fleur de Lys. This watermark belongs to the well-known French paper maker Jean Villedary who in the middle of the 18th century was employed in France and in Angouleme whose paper was exported to Holland. From 1758 Villedary also had a paper mill in Hattem in Overijssel where he paper produced for the Dutch market.

Valentine Was Educated At Highgate School And Worcester College, Oxford Before Working In The Gas Industry Until 1927. In 1928, He Moved To The Underground Group Where He Worked As Assistant To Its Managing Director Frank Pick. After The Underground Group Was Absorbed Into The London Passenger Transport Board (Lptb) In 1933, He Remained With Pick (Who Became The Lptb's Vice-Chairman) Until 1936. Valentine Then Held A Series Of Senior Management Positions Within The Lptb Including Chief Commercial Officer And Operating Manager (Railways). When The Lptb Was Nationalised In 1948, Valentine Was Made A Member Of The Board Of The London Transport Executive (Lte), The Lptb's Replacement. As Part Of The Board, Valentine Argued For The Abandonment Of Trams In London, Seeing Them As A Major Cause Of Road Congestion, Which Would Be Relieved By The Introduction Of Buses, With The Aesthetic Benefit Of Doing Away With Overhead Wires And The Noisy Operation Of Trams. He Was Also A Member Of The London Plan Working Party Between 1946 And 1948 Which Led Planning For New Transport Routes In The Capital Including The Victoria Line Built In The 1960S And 1970S. He Served On The Lte Board Until 1954 When He Moved To The Board Of The Lte's Parent, The British Transport Commission (Btc). In 1959, While Remaining A Member Of The Btc Board, He Returned To The Lte As Its Chairman And Remained In That Position Until The Lte Was Abolished And Replaced With The London Transport Board Of Which He Was Also Chairman Until He Retired In 1965. Valentine Was A Member Of The Channel Tunnel Study Group From 1957 To 1962 And A Director Of The Channel Tunnel Company From 1956 To 1969. Interior covers with decorative blue endpaper. -- Front and back cover with the coat of arms of Marie Joséphine of Savoy (1753-1810). -- Very rare armorial binding of a well-known figure of French royalty. || Marie-Joséphine de Savoie was princess of France, and through her marriage to the future king Louis XVIII (Louis Stanislas Xavier, 1755-1824) also a countess of Provence. One notable fact about Marie Joséphine of Savoy is that, despite her position as the wife of Louis XVIII, she never became Queen of France - even though she was regarded as such by Bourbon royalist Legitimists. This is because she passed away in 1810, 4 years before her husband ascended the throne as Louis XVIII in 1814, following the fall of Napoleon and the Bourbon Restoration. Her life was marked by personal and political difficulties. She lived through the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, went into exile with her husband, and spent much of her later life in relative obscurity, moving between different European courts. Marie Joséphine was also known for her frail health and devout Catholic faith, and she reportedly led a somewhat melancholic and reclusive life during her exile. Her marriage to Louis XVIII was famously unhappy, and she was overshadowed by the events of the revolution and the Napoleonic era. Rare complete set of the Ordonnance de Là opold I, Duc de Lorraine et de Bar, promulgated at Lunà ville in November 1707 and printed in Nancy the following year by Paul Barbier, official printer to the duke. Là opold I, Duke of Lorraine (1679â"1729), restored to his duchy after the Treaty of Ryswick (1697), spent much of his reign rebuilding and reforming Lorraine after decades of French occupation. This Ordonnance represents a sweeping reform of judicial administration, addressing civil and criminal procedure, the duties of magistrates, the rights of the accused, appeals, and punishments. The work is divided into two parts (here bound separately in two volumes), and includes extensive articles governing local courts, appeals, and procedural justice. The text is printed in a clear Roman type, with woodcut ducal arms on the title pages. Provenance: early handwritten annotations on the title pages, likely by a contemporary magistrate (possibly âClaudii Barthà lemyâ noted in ink). This is an important witness to early 18th-century ducal law, preceding Lorraineâs full absorption into France (1766). Ink signatures/annotations on both title pages, possibly ownership or institutional marks from a Lorraine magistrate. Early shelf marks or notes relevant to legal practice. Fair to Good. Bindings rubbed with loss at headcaps, spines faded, boards scuffed, corners rounded. Text blocks clean, paper fresh with only light toning. Early annotations present on title pages. A solid, complete set in contemporary condition. Contemporary full calf, spines with raised bands, gilt-tooled compartments, faded titling (âOrdonn. de Là opoldâ). Bindings heavily worn with loss to headcaps, surface abrasions, rubbing to boards, corners rounded. Still intact, boards holding, text blocks sound.

Offices for Holy week were frequently issued, each in accordance to the use of the region or Archdioceses; this one for the use of the Royal House of France. Collombat was a reknowned French printer, eventually elevated to the position of Imprimeur Ordinaire du Roy & de la Maison de Sa Majesté. Illustrated with vignettes, woodcut frame borders to divisional titles, engraved initials and culs de lampe.

Raised bands on spines with a small fleur-de-lis in the center of each compartment, surrounded by a circle and flanked by single and double filet in diamond and circular designs. Each compartment is bordered by double filet. Alternating fleur-de-lis are gilt tooled in one row at the top of spine and in two rows at the bottom of spine. Cover edges and turn-ins are gilt tooled, marbled endpapers, gilt page edges. Two frontispiece, one representing the King and Queen in prayer, and a title frontispiece. Five engravings in taille-douce (all without text) by Humblot, one at the beginning of each office. Printed on luxury Holland paper. Some minor rubbing to covers and spine.
