Biography of Brigadier Sir Frederick Galleghan, who had a long and distinguished career at peace and at war, and held a commission for more than 50 years. Arrogant, humble, abrasive yet gentle, ferocious yet compassionate, Brigadier Black Jack Galleghan could walk with Kinds and never lose the common touch. The legends about him are impossible to believe, but they are true. He fought in two World Wars and held a commissioned rank for 50 years. In his last command, he staged the biggest ambuscade in the Second World War at Gemenchai in 1942. For this battle, in which 1,000 Japanese soldiers were killed, his battalion received a commendation from the Japanese High Command - a rare distinction. His distinguished military service culminated in his promotion to Major-General, and he represented Australia as Head of the Military Mission during the Berlin crisis.
