Arnhold, un antropólogo inglés que había recorrido medio mundo, llegó a Hoyales de Roa, localidad burgalesa de la Ribera de…l Duero, con la intención de recabar información para elaborar su tesis doctoral. En 1979, tras tres años viviendo en Hoyales, la presentaría en la Universidad de Manitoba, en Canadá, con el título de «Condiciones de existencia en un pueblo castellano. Una etnografía en contexto histórico y nacional». Su minucioso trabajo, inédito hasta la aparición de esta edición, en el que Hoyales aparece como un pueblo representativo de la ruralidad de la Castilla de la época, muestra cómo una «modernización del campo» concebida desde despachos alejados del mismo, chocaba una y otra vez con la cultura, experiencia histórica y, sobre todo, con las condiciones materiales de vida de quienes se esperaba que la llevaran a cabo. Así, esta etnografía evidencia la convicción que los agricultores castellanos tenían de que, mientras la población rural era sistemáticamente olvidada, el fruto de su trabajo siempre beneficiaba a las ciudades. En el contexto de la transición, no había, pues, lugar para la idealización de la comunidad. Algo no incompatible, por lo demás, con una visión amable de Hoyales. Como irónicamente escribió Arnhold: «Disfruté mucho de mi estancia en el pueblo, y estaría encantado de establecerme allí. . . ¡siempre que no tuviera que ganarme la vida como agricultor!» *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente.
